| "Fishing
Frenzy" #65 Weekly Fishing Report | | by
John Gabruk March 2, 2003. | Fishing
here in Puerto Vallarta, continues to be good. Long Range boats at both the Bank
& Corbetania but that's not the news. Bluewater SPEAR
FISHING was the new twist to P.V. sportfishing this week. It amazed everyone who
was involved or observed. During the past week, the big tuna have been at the
Bank. 300 pounders could be seen jumping in and around the bait schools but very
few hook-ups on Tuna over 150 lbs. So, when Master Baiter's Sportfishing &
Tackle got a call from Rick Hadley & Kevin Scully inquiring into if the big
tuna were in the area, the answer was yes the additional information they really
weren't biting, for some reason which is usually a negative, but not this time.
The people calling were bluewater spear fisherman looking for the first 300 lb
Yellowfin ever taken by spear. The fact they weren't being caught on rod &
reel wasn't important, just the fact that they were here. Rick Hadley & Kevin
Scully booked an overnight trip aboard the High Maintenance for the coming weekend.
The day prior to their charter, they showed up at the tackle store with their
spear-guns and other equipment. The guns were 6 feet long, the wood of teak and
5 big black bands on each spear-gun. I've never seen spear-guns like this in the
past, they were custom made by these guys and looked seriously powerful. While
everyone was talking in the store about the next day and what might be seen at
the Bank. Captain Steve pulled in with his flags flying, showing off the days
catch, Yellowfin tuna with the largest 120 lbs and dorado (mahi-mahi). A marlin
had been hooked but 15 minutes into the fight, it came unhooked but all in all,
a great day. The fact that a big tuna not giant but good
size was caught and got everyone excited about the next day and the talk about
spear-fishing a marlin popped up and quickly I said "Don't spear any marlin,
it will end up spearing you"! Some joking about it went on but everyone agreed
spear-fishing a marlin would be dangerous, at least. The
next day, High Maintenance took off at 4:00 am with the first time bluewater spear-fishing
charter out of Puerto Vallarta. The boats that came in that day had numerous tuna
from 40 to 80 lbs from both Corbetania and the Bank, El Amo released one black
marlin and farmed 2 sails. The big tuna were seen in both places but did not seem
to want to eat. While cleaning some tuna, sea snails were found inside of the
tuna along with some squid. That would account for most of the tuna being caught
on small squid bait rigs. The good news is the big tuna are still here and could
change their preferred food back to skipjack any day.
Dorado
are still all over the place and an easy target in and outside the bay. The main
difference between this week and last week is the arrival of sails, sailfish are
starting at El Morro and continue to the bank in real good numbers. Trolling the
dead bait and medium "Scupper" lures have accounted for most of the
hook-ups while trolling. Casting live goggle eyes to sails on the surface has
been very productive this week. This coming week will be great fishing here in
P.V. So, book a charter and get out now. You can call Tonya at "Master Baiter's
Sportfishing & Tackle" for the right boat, at the right price based on
what species you want to target. The
spear-fisherman returned aboard the "High Maintenance" with flags flying.
What a great trip, they speared 12 tuna, the largest 152 lbs, 6 others went over
100 lbs, 4 dorado from 30 to 50 lbs and even though they missed hitting that 300
lb plus fish, they both hit their personal best on tuna. Way to go guys, maybe
next year you'll get that 300 pounder.
