FISHING REPORT
| "Fishing
Frenzy" #66 Weekly Fishing Report | | by
John Gabruk March 16, 2003. | Hi
every one this is Tonya from Master Baiter's standing in for John, he's at the
Fred Hall Show looking at all the latest in what's going on in the sportfishing
world. This is the time of the year that all the manufacturers, distributors,
new comers & designers of fishing tackle & accessories all get together
in one place to market & demonstrate what's hot in the fishing industry. This
is the adult male's Disneyland! From the moment they enter this huge arena, their
eyes glaze over and they are in awe! Have fun John, we'll see you next week with
a report of how it all went The talk on the docks this week
is about the long liners, apparently the Mexican Government is cracking down.
The Navy has posted signs prohibiting long lining and it seems as if they are
enforcing it. The local boys have been commenting on how many more Dorado we've
had and much larger. Coincidence? Now, we just need to work on the Tuna Seiners,
way to GO NAVY! A lot of action going on in fishing this
week! Most fishing trips out of Puerto Vallarta are to the 36-mile spot, Corbetania.
But
we seem to be acquiring a different fishing spot this month approximately
the same distance. About 15 miles North-West of Punta de Mita the water is getting
cold, about 78 degrees (I guess cold is relative). This is bringing in lots of,
STRIPERS (Striped Marlin) along with Sailfish & Dorado (Mahi-Mahi). What an
amazing day on the water to see these stripers jumping & tail dancing on the
water, it's breathtaking. Catching (& release PLEASE) is even better. According
to Captain Steve, trolling lures has been ensuring hook-ups all week! But then
again, when doesn't he hook-up? It amazes me how he can fish 20 days in a row,
and then on his forced day off what does he do? GO FISHING, of coarse. This is
why day after day, year after year, Captain Steve catches the most fish. I guess
that's why he's won the top awards for the World Billfish Series World Championship,
twice! Captain Steve also says Dorado hook-ups are a sure thing, they are all
over this area and in very strong numbers the average size is 40 to 50 lbs. If
you spot birds or porpoise, you will find 10 to 15 lb Yellowfin Tuna if you are
looking for a lighter catch. Corbetania
is full Stripers, Sails & Dorado and 150 to 180 lb Yellowfin Tuna this week.
The tuna are eating squid and don't seem to be hooking up, hopefully that will
change before this goes to print! If looking for Wahoo, go early, troll hydro
magnums or marauders with wire leader in the shallow areas of Corbetania. Wahoo
are averaging 60 lbs but this is Vallarta and you never know when that 150 pounder
will pop up out of the blue!
Stop by Master Baiter's Sportfishing
& Tackle located 3 doors from the lighthouse in MARINA VALLARTA (when facing
the water) and see Tonya. She will direct you to the fishing boat; crew, grounds
& equipment for what you want to catch and our company owned boats have a
