Frenzy"

Welcome
to another fishing frenzy. As usual the fishing is great.
This time of the year is considered as the “slow
season” for fishing by most locals. So, people
at times will be misfortuned as far as just how good
it can be -and is- right now. See, the locals compare
fishing now to the incredible amount of Black &
Blue Marlin, along with huge Yellowfin Tuna caught in
the summer months. So when the huge fish are gone, the
locals consider it “slow” fishing here in
Puerto Vallarta.
Not so! Dorado (Mahi-Mahi), Sailfish
and small to medium size tuna up to around 100 pounds
can be caught in the same day, right now and right here.
And not just a few, we’re having great days! Monday,
the “High Maintenance”, a 35-loa Luhrs flybridge
convertible, released 3 Sailfish in one day & boated
4 big bull Dorado. Although not a record day for locals,
the Boyce Family had the best fishing day of their lives.
So, when inquiring “How’s the fishing?”
here or in any destination, if you are met with a response
of “good” or “bad”, find out
exactly what they are comparing it to. You may just
be pleasantly surprised. You may not consider a 350-lb
Tuna good; catching many smaller Tuna would be a “better”
day for you. Fishing is great in Puerto Vallarta for
medium sized fish 30 to 100 lbs, right now.
Not many boats have been going to
El Banco (49 miles out from Marina Vallarta) and there
is no real need due to the amount of fish being caught
at Corbetaña. The two boats that did go to El
Banco both caught Black Marlin. This is very strange
& uncommon for this time of year. The water continues
to be warm, 80 to 81 degrees and some Marlin have decided
not to go south, but rather just to hang out in our
local hot spots.
Corbetaña has been hot. Tuna
30 to 70 pounds can be found in schools & around
the rock can be picked up with small to medium HI-5
or Williamson Lures. The color doesn’t seem to
matter all that much. Troll the edges of the schools
for the biggest fish or get in the middle and toss out
or fly line a goggle eye (live bait) for an immediate
hook-up.
If you want Sailfish, go to a softhead
Pakula or Scupper by Prosoft along with a couple of
dead Lisas (bait) in your pattern and Sails will pop
up almost immediately. This week has been a great week
for Sails. It seems every boat that has targeted Sails
this week has produced multiple fish. The reason for
the softheads is Sailfish like to “bat”
the bait or lure around a bit prior to eating. A hard
lure will sometimes scare the fish and they are gone
as fast as they appeared. If you have a playful Sailfish
that won’t take the lure, use a “drop back”
bait, they just can’t seem to resist it!
Big Dorado (mahi-mahi) are being
caught in the same areas, moving in towards El Morro.
“El Amo” and “Magnifico” have
both been concentrating on this area and have been tearing
up the big Bulls (Bull Dorado) all week. An occasional
Sailfish can be caught in the same area, along with
20 to 30-lb Yellowfin Tuna, perfect for first timers
or people who want a lot of action!
So, fishing is good, just not great
for the giants but lots of action all day! Who knows?
You may just get lucky… Besides, you won’t
catch anything sitting around the pool or shopping downtown
except a suntan, credit card bill or hangover. Get out
there now and have a fresh fish dinner with your catch.
