FISHING REPORT

"Fishing Frenzy"
#68 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
April 13, 2003.

Welcome to yet another Fishing Frenzy. This week has been exceptionally good for medium size fish to 100 lbs. The Sailfish can be seen jumping starting at El Morro and heading out to Corbetania, then south towards Sayulita. Dead bait, Lisas or live Goggle Eyes trolled slow under the birds will produce multiple hook-ups. Let me be a little more specific. First, start out trolling dead Lisas, a good idea would be to troll “Scupper” lures or cupped “Pakula’s” in between the short and long Lisas that way when a Sail pops up behind a Scupper or Pakula, you can either knock down the long rigger and bring up a dead Lisa from behind or drop back the short rigger right into the mouth and watch it gobble it up like a gum drop.

High Maintenance nailed 4 Sailfish and 8 big Dorado on Saturday, south towards Sayulita. This is the time of the year that the commercial fisherman put out buoys or submerged palapas (palm leaves tied together) about 2 feet under the water. The ONLY way to find them is to have the way points (GPS) co-ordinates or come across the marker. The markers are one-gallon milk bottles tied off to the top of the palapas and they are almost impossible to find. Captain Steve of the High Maintenance communicates daily with the commercial boats, and for a small mordida (tip) he gets the way points! Master Baiter’s Sportfishing & Tackle has and does it all!

The palapas are like candy land; all the fish are there. The baitfish gather under the shade, small Tuna and Dorado eat them, then the Sailfish eat the small Dorado and Tuna. Wahoo can be seen swimming by like a streak. That’s where the High Maintenance and Tonya Too will be fishing this coming week.

Live Goggle Eyes fly lined will get immediate attention. If you run low on bait, Dorado bellies work just fine or cast small to medium Sardine casting jigs and Dorado will go nuts. If you aren’t getting bitten, go to a lighter test line or Fluoro Carbon. Some big, up to 200 lb Tuna have been seen swimming with the Dolphin schools but are skittish and don’t want to bite. Oh well, that could change tomorrow. The moral of the story is you can’t catch anything by just reading this report. So, get out now and I’ll see you dockside with your catch of a lifetime. .

Did you know you could take up to 70 pounds of fillets to USA or Canada per person? You need a regular cooler, no ice & no dry ice. Master Baiter’s Sportfishing & Tackle have the ONLY freezing service in town and YES, it will stay frozen! Why not remember your fishing trip all summer long & every time you pull a bag out of the freezer, you can boast about “the one that didn’t get away”. Stop by Master Baiter’s Sportfishing & Tackle located 3 doors from the lighthouse in MARINA VALLARTA (when facing the water). We will direct you to the fishing boat; crew, grounds & equipment for what you want to catch and our company owned boats have a GUARANATEED CATCH.
