FISHING REPORT

#70 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
April 27, 2003.

I hope everyone had a good Easter! For our part, we had a great Easter week here in Puerto Vallarta.

Wahoo is probably the most elusive fish in the ocean. Even if hooked, they have an uncanny ability to de-hook themselves. They will grind their jaws and dislodge a treble hook like the hooks on a yozuri hydromagner, also with the sharpest teeth in the ocean, they will cut through 400-lb test mono without knocking the line down off the outrigger, and that's a fact! It’s happened to me, so if you are using anything but a single hook lure for Wahoo, change it!

Because the Wahoo are wide open at Corbeteña, they turn on and off fast off any given lure, so make sure you have a few different kinds.

Dorado continue to be just about everywhere outside the bay. You can pick them up trolling medium size Hi5 lures or prosoft scuppers (lure), troll a couple of dead 'Lisas' along with them and you will definitely pick up some nice sized Dorado. Just look for the birds and you will find Dorado along with Sailfish. The water is now 81° and everything is available.

Also along with do-do’s and Sails are Striped Marlin. Striped Marlin aren't around Puerto Vallarta much as a rule and when they are, they don't stay long …but they're here now! Tony in a private local yacht named "Animal House" nailed 6 stripers on Monday. They were all released, but what a blast fighting and watching these rare to P.V. fish jump and greyhound across the surface! Tony uses primarily lures and a lure-hooked marlin will fight very differently than a live bait-hooked Marlin. Lure-hooked fish will jump and shake because they are mostly mouth-hooked, so they break the surface and try to shake the lure or hook free while a live bait hooked marlin more often than not will dive and go deep. They will jump mostly when they are close to the boat, you can tell when they are going to jump by watching the line move up towards the surface. Have someone ready with a camera so, you can get a picture of the airborne striper. Black and Blue Marlin act the same way.

So if you want a good mixture of game fish, now is the time! Fishing is good, not great for the giants, but lots of action all day! Who knows? You may just get lucky… Besides, you won’t catch anything sitting around the pool or shopping downtown except a suntan, credit card bill or hangover. Get out there now and have a fresh fish dinner with your catch. Did you know that you can take up to 70 pounds of fillets to USA or Canada per person? You need a regular cooler, no ice & no dry ice. Master Baiter’s Sportfishing & Tackle have the ONLY freezing service in town. So, take it home and remember your fishing trip all summer long & every time you pull it out of the freezer, you can show off “the one that didn’t get away”.

Stop by Master Baiter’s Sportfishing & Tackle located 3 doors from the lighthouse in MARINA VALLARTA (when facing the water). We will direct you to the right fishing boat, crew, grounds & equipment for what you want to catch and our company-owned boats have a GUARANTEED CATCH.
