Welcome
back to another fishing frenzy! That’s what it’s
been for the past week. School-size yellowfin tuna (30
to 50 lbs.) are all over the place starting about 5
miles outside the bay heading toward Corbetaña.
There you'll see schools of dolphin and birds flying
overhead, and running in front of these schools are
yellowfin tuna. For the best hook-up ratio, don’t
come up from behind the school, this will make the tuna
nervous. They will dive and spread out, which will produce
single hook-ups at best!
To insure multiple hook-ups, troll
cedar plugs or small jet head lures! Come from the side
of the dolphin schools a fair distance in front of them.
Position the boat toward the middle and slow down just
enough for the schools to almost catch up. Then troll
at the same speed as the dolphin are running keeping
your lures slightly ahead of them and get ready, you
will definitely have multiple hook-ups. Be sure not
to have more lines in the water than people to handle
them! I say this because there’s a good chance
of all the lines going off at once!
If you're looking for something a
bit bigger, head on out to where the big fish (not the
monsters yet) start. At the rock of Corbetaña,
you will find wahoo in large numbers, sailfish and tuna
to 100 lbs. For wahoo, get to Corbetaña at daybreak
and troll tet heads, long marauders or yozuri hydromag’s
fast close to the rock for early morning hook-ups. When
a few other boats arrive, the wahoo will slow down or
stop due to the noise generated by the boats. Then put
out a couple of bullet tuna or skipjack along with some
goggle eyes to catch bigger tuna and sailfish. There
is also a chance of hitting one of the early black marlin
that have already shown up at both Corbetaña
and the Bank.
Fishing is good all over Puerto Vallarta
right now! It just depends on what you want and how
big you want it!
Dorado (mahi mahi) are spread out
and can be picked up anywhere outside the bay by trolling
dead lisas or bright colored lures.
The clouds are starting to appear
and the rain will start early this year. The bay will
be full of sailfish and dorado. As soon as the first
rains, you can expect the half-day trips to be very
productive very soon.
The water is up to 82° at the
Bank or El Banco now, that means the monsters are on
their way, look out!
