FISHING REPORT

#72 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
May 11, 2003.

Back again, and things are getting better by the day. As you know by now, when the water gets warmer, the fishing gets better! Well, good news! It’s up to 80o and that’s when the magic starts here in Puerto Vallarta. The first of the billfish to show up in numbers are the Sailfish (Pez Vela) and they are here in force! Follow the birds to the sardine balls and count the sails. It’s a beautiful sight to see, 5 to 10 sails out of the water balling up sardines. Then cast a live bait in the middle with an immediate hook-up. As you approach the school you will see many more sails down 10 to 30 feet below the surface feeding on the bottom of the huge bait balls.

Multiple hook-ups, doubles or triples, are common now, and 8 to 10 sails per boat per day is common too.

Also, slow trolled Goggle Eyes work great by schooling fish & troll dead lisas (Mullets) behind teasers to bring the fish up while looking for schooling fish. “Mold Craft “ squid teasers large or small PINK or “FIN TRIX” or MOLD CRAFT” imitation bait fish teasers work best. While trolling for sails, you want as much in the water to bring up as much fish as you can handle without tangling and still be able to clear the lines when the inevitable strike comes!

Now for the people who live to cover ground a bit faster. Soft head lures work great for sails at times. When sails whack (hit with their bill) hard heads they will turn and run. Not so with soft heads, soft head lures feel like a bait fish when whacked and the sail stay with them until they take the lure, or you can drop a live or dead bait back to them. The lures of choice are “PRO-SOFT” SCUPPERS. They have a cupped head, very soft & bring sail up like a magnet!

Although COASTERS are great for tuna & dorado, scuppers are without a doubt the most productive sailfish lure I’ve ever used or had reports of!! Everyone who fishes sails should have at least two in their arsenal.

Dorado are still around in good numbers and will eat just about anything you put in front of them. Dorado (or Mahi Mahi as they are known by some) are crazy, they will try to eat a lure as big as they are, maybe it’s the small fish syndrome.

HOT TIP OF THE MONTH

When booking a fishing charter in Mexico (or anywhere), don’t have price be the determining factor! You get what you pay for! Not that you should get the most expensive charter, just make sure the people you charter from can & do provide the SERVICES and EQUIPMENT to ensure the experience you’re looking for. There is nothing more disappointing than to book a charter, build up your expectations, look forward to the fishing trip of a lifetime, and then show up to a boat totally misrepresented, slow, smoky, bad equipment & a captain & crew you can’t communicate with. Wouldn’t you agree?

When booking a charter, inquire how long the business has been running, types of boats, speed, equipment & whether English is spoken. If the price is higher or lower than the competition, ask “why?” “Because we like you” doesn’t cut it! Don’t get burned and ruin your trip for $100. dollars. Book and pay for the trip best suited for you, for the services & equipment best suited for what you want to do. If you get hemming & hawing, RUN!!!!

TUNA: BIG Tuna are starting to show with same consistency, many 100-lb plus tuna this week but nothing topping 200 lb…. YET. Not to worry, they’re on the way! So get to the gym and be ready when they are, two hands on the handle of the reel will not be tolerated!! That’s it for now, the fishing and this report will get better and better as the water gets warmer. Next report and from there on, we will have pictures and feature the “catch of the week”, so don’t miss it!

On a 1 to 5 scale (1 being the best) PV gets 1½ fish rating. Until next time, happy hook-up and best fishes !!!!
