FISHING REPORT

#74 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
June 15, 2003.

Hello Again! Things are starting to calm down at Master Baiters Sportfishing and Tackle from the recent disruptions. And charter bookings are at an all-time high! That’s great news for us and the people booking charters.

The season is starting off fast and furious with a rainbow of pescado (fish) varieties available now! The return of the Black Marlin has the phone ringing off the hook at the reservation desk. Week-long blocks of time are being reserved for the coming months and spots are filling fast.

Corbetañia has been very hot lately, Wahoo, Sails, Giant Pargo (Red Snapper) along with the Black and Blue Marlin are being caught on a daily basis. Just make a decision on what you want to catch (which can be tough), then put out the appropriate bait or lure to get the job done.

Live Skipjacks have been accounting for the most Marlin this week. A 600- to 650-lb. Black was caught and released on Master Baiter’s newest co-owned boat, a 42-ft. Bertram named “Notorious” with Captain Steve.

The Tuna haven’t settled into one spot for any length of time yet and can be found at Corbetañia one day and at the Bank (El Banco) the next. Two Giants were caught on large Black Bart lures five miles outside of the Bank on Tuesday by Captain Ricardo aboard the “Sea Chaser”, a privately-owned 54-ft. Bertram on the way to the Isla Marias in search of Sordies (Swordfish). Their luck was good and they hooked two swordfish during the three-day trip. The first took one and a half hours to bring in. They both were caught on Squid and light stick down deep at night. It was never seen prior to becoming unbuttoned so of course it was a “Monster”. The other hooked midday after being sighted. They trolled dead Mullet slow and way, way back. When it was put in front of her mouth, then let sink, the Sordie couldn’t resist and dove on the bait! Almost four hours later, the hook pulled at leader and the crew went `nuts´!

If you’ve never been aboard a boat with a crew and angles that fish regularly together as a team you haven’t experienced the special three minutes just after a big fish is lost. When a ‘Monster’ is lost at leader like this one was, everyone blames everyone. “You pulled the leader too hard!” or “Not hard Enough!” “The boat wasn’t positioned correctly… the hook wasn’t set good enough… you didn’t let the fish swallow the bait… or, the coffee wasn’t warm enough in the morning…” Until someone says, “Hey, Shit Happens. Next!” Then everyone is friends again, more baits are put out and it’s time to look for another one…..

Anyway, all and all, the fishing here in Puerto Vallarta is very good. So come on down and get on the water! Nothing can be caught if you don’t get some lines out!

Just a reminder, Tanya is no longer with Master Baiter’s Sportfishing. No deposits or payments of any kind should be sent to her PayPal or her personal account. No bookings should be made thru the Master Baiter’s web site until further notice.
