July 6, 2003. |
Welcome back, this is John Gabruk,
co-owner of Master Baiter’s Sportfishing, along
with Captain Steve Torres Soto and my brother Stan (J.B.)
We have recently gone through some
restructuring of our company and are happy to announce
our Grand Re-Opening on Sunday, July 15th, 2003!
With Tonya’s unexpected decision
to separate herself from the company, we’ve had
some unavoidable situations arise that produced some
temporary setbacks. We apologize for any inconvenience
this may have caused our customers. We are proud and
happy to say things will return to normal after the
15th of July.
Now to the really important stuff:
fishing is fantastic! It’s that time of the year
again, just about anything is available now and it’s
all big!
The biggest news is the 1058-lb.
black marlin caught this week on a privately-owned yacht
“Sincuidado”, a 54-ft Bertram Sport fisher.
This is the largest black marlin ever weighed here in
Puerto Vallarta! This monster was taken with a live
skipjack at Corbeteña on 100-lbs tackle. The
fight went on for just over 4 hours.
The largest black marlin or blue
marlin even weighed here in Puerto Vallarta, prior to
that was by Captain Danny of the “Marla 11”,
again at Corbeteña. Amazingly, both fish were
wired (leader) by mate “Rooster fish”. Know
that due to his hair style.
Two grander in two years, that’s
not bad when you consider many of the lower priced charter
boats and same of the better ones have been spooled
on both 50`s and 80`s. Along with the fact that in Puerto
Vallarta, marlin fishing is a relatively new sport.
Most charter boats fished inside the bay for sailfish,
small tuna, Dorado roosterfish and jack cavelly (croaker).
Serious marlin fishing has only come
on strong for the past 5 years and mostly by privately-owned
boats. But every year things pick up and now Puerto
Vallarta is one of the premier fishing spots around
the world.
Way to go, roosterfish!
Last week, “Strike One”
was the big winner, racking up a whopping 9 marlin to
the boat in four trips to Corbeteña and three
yellow fin 200-lbs plus. “Strike One” is
a 38-ft. Lures open, fast and comfortable with excellent
equipment.
“Magnifico” had 3 hook-ups
and got two to the boat. The third was a yellow fin
tuna that jumped and sounded and ripped 600 yards of
100-lb. test line off of a Pen 50w without even thinking
about slowing down. This monster was estimated at approx.
900 lbs. by Captain Pepino, a very experienced long
term charter & privately owned boat captain. I believe
his estimates.
Also last week, four Canadians were
looking to have the fishing trip of a lifetime, and
that’s just what they got aboard “Strike
One” to the rock (Corbeteña). They arrived
just after day break and the bait was already up. They
got three baits out and while putting out the fourth,
the short rigger went off with a big boil just off the
back of the boat on the stread and the Shimano 50 lines
screaming. While clearing the lines, another went off
double-hooked on a giant yellow fin tuna. Now the fun
began. Two inexperienced fisherman with much more at
the and of their lines than either could have even anticipated.
Luckily for them they headed the same way and that along
with the help of the captain and crew, 1 hour and 20
minutes later, both fish were on board. The other two
men each hooked black marlin. Everyone was ecstatic
and they left the docks vowing their return.
Tuna are also coming on strong. The
Bank has had large schools breezing by daily running
between 40 and 80 lbs. They tend to come up on the bank,
hang for a few hours, then gone again. Large cedar plugs,
red and white, blue and white, along with Mexican flags
trolled fast are producing the majority of hook-ups
on these fish.
The big tuna 200-lbs plus are at
Corbeteña. The structure there does allow the
tuna boats to drop their nets so the big tuna hang in
close to the rock and gorge themselves with skipjack.
Live skip pies with 200-lbs fluorocarbon leaders are
what will get you hooked up on the big tuna 400 lbs.
El Morro is great for marlin, just too visible for the
tuna.
Dorado and sailfish are both out
there also but with the return of the marlin and tuna,
that’s what is primarily being targeted. So get
out now! Back next week.
