FISHING REPORT

Welcome back, week after week, year
after year, at this time of the year I get calls and
e mails asking how accurate this report really is. Most
of the time with a hint of skepticism! Well every report
I do is based on fact. As I have said in the past, one
of my biggest challenges from May thru December is how
to word "Puerto Vallarta is wide open" in
different ways. In fact I have held back some at times,
so what I write doesn't sound too good to be true.
Well
here I go again; the big stuff continues to show a strong
presence at both, Corbeteña and the Bank! Along
with as many Wahoo as you can reel in, the Wahoo bite
shuts down about 9:00 a.m. So you need to get out early.
Ya know, strange things happen when
it comes to water conditions, currents, tides, moon
phases, etc, you can hear totally opposite statements
from either educated or self proclaimed experts. Trying
to follow the advice of the experts, after you decide
who to listen may increase your chances of having a
great day or winning tournaments. But nothing can compare
or compete with the knowledge and experience of a Captain
that can read the ocean's signs, notice changes as they
happen and smell where the fish are. There are these
types of men, not a lot, and when you have the opportunity
to fish along side of one of these Captains you will
you should grab at the chance, look, listen and try
to learn what he is doing, watching and checking for,
it will be the fishing educator of a life time. Puerto
Vallarta has one such Captain. "CAPT. STEVE"
HIGH MAINTENANCE'S CAPTAIN. FISH FIND HIM! Again and
again he will return to the docks with fish flags flying
that make his 35ft luhrs convertible looks like its
coming form a parade. He wins just about every tournament
he enters (on at least places) and is the 2000 and 2001
world billfish championship Captain. Fishing with Capt.
Steve is an experience you will remember for life and
one that should not be missed!
A perfect example of this is a trip
Capt. Steve made to the bank this week on an over night
charter. They arrived at day break and immediately put
out some Wahoo lures, Steve circled a school of skipjack
and on the first past double hook up Wahoo. They continued
this for another hour and put 8 Wahoo from 50 to 80
lbs on the boat.
Then went out the bait catchers,
within 10 minutes the tuna tubes were full and the next
four baits went out. Two on long riggers and two on
down riggers. Twenty minutes later a hookup on what
was estimated to be a 700lb black marlin. The two day
trip produced 11 Wahoo, 2 black marlin and 12 tuna,
two over 200lbs and a sailfish. Two of the other boats
out the first day got a few Wahoo and small tuna but
nothing like what Capt. Steve got to the boat!! Corbeteña
has black and blue marlin and big yellow fin tuna, the
tuna bite has been hit and miss on the big stuff the
past two weeks with only a handful over two hundred
pounds and one over 350 lbs. Part of this is because
the sailfish have shown up again right outside the bay
and a lot of boats have been going after those instead
of the longer ride out. In side the bay small tuna skipjack
and jack cravely are at Los arcos moving south about
I mile off shore.
So things are good here now, but things will be getting
better as September approaches.
Until next week, good luck and great
fishing!
