FISHING REPORT

#78 Weekly Fishing Report

by John Gabruk
August 3, 2003.

Welcome back! This week, the big news is Giant Yellow fin tuna, it’s wide open 200-lbs plus yellow fin.

Mark your calendar for next year also because this is the time of the year, year after year, when the big tuna are thick here in Puerto Vallarta and will stay until the end of November.

Live bait is what’s hot now for the giants, the problem is catching the skipjacks! Between the amounts of boats fishing Corbeteña along with the incredible amount of giants eating everything in sight, bait is hard to catch.

Getting out early will insure at least a few baits caught prior to the boat noise driving the bait down deep jigging will also produce bait strikes but it’s hard at Corbeteña.

The Bank is a different story, the giants being in closer keeps most of the boats from making the longer more costly run out to the bank. That’s a mistake. The Bank has more fish, more bait and less boat traffic.

Captain Steve had a three-day charter this week, the first day at Corbeteña was pretty good, a 400-lb black marlin tail wrapped that took 3 hours to get to the boat, and two tuna approximately 300 lbs. each.

The next days to EL BANCO! The two days produced two more black marlin along with four 250 plus tuna, one weighing approximately 390 lbs. Capt. Freddy aboard “Mi Jenny” had a charter Wednesday, one hook-up, one fish, a giant 375-pounder.

Fluorocarbon leaders are still the secret, if you don’t have it, buy it! But no matter what you have to do, if giant yellow fin tuna are what you want, get out NOW.

Now for a bit of good news, Daniel has returned to Master Baiter’s Sport Fishing and Tackle. This is a long overdue reunion that has everyone at Master Baiter’s excited, as you know, if you are a weekly reader, Daniel was the manager of MBS for approximately two years. Due to personal reasons Daniel had to leave for a while but now he’s back, so if you need to book a charter or if you want any info call or come by Master Baiter’s and talk to Daniel.
If you want a 4- to 6-hour trip, now is also good for that, Los Arcos has Mahi-mahi or Dorado to 25-lbs along with sailfish, so a short trip is a good choice if time or budget is a bit limited.

Pictures of the giant yellow fin are from Bryan Potts. He went out with Capt. Freddy on Saturday to Corbeteña and caught it without any help! This beautiful giant was estimated at more than 6’4”and almost 400 lbs.
