 PVMirror:
Mr. Alberto Sanchez Cardenas, good afternoon and thank
you for granting me this interview. Up to now what is
the status of the organization for the tournament that
will take place in November 20, 21 and 22.
RE: We have advanced
70% and we are about to print out what will be the promotional
flyer, for which we are focusing in getting more sponsors
to advertise in it. At the same time we are sending
the official invitation to the international fishing
clubs.
PVMirror: What are
your objectives or goals for this years tournament?
Re: First of all
is to exceed the number of contestants to this years
tournament. This year also we will be more formal and
will increase the quality of the events that surround
the tournament. During the tournament, as never before,
we will take care and give personal and special attention
to all of our sponsors. We recognize that each year
it is thanks to them that our tournament is possible.
This board of directors and with the support of all
of our members we are committed to show them our deepest
gratefulness for their constant support.
PVMirror: Who are
the clubs board of directors now?
RE: Mr. Francisco
Avalos Murguia is treasurer, Mr. Luis Gutierrez Garcia
is secretary, Mr. Raul Serna is vice-president and I
am the president.
PVMirror: This year
what is your commitment with the society of Vallarta?
RE: Our commitment
is to show with our actions that this yearly tournament
is for and to the people of Puerto Vallarta. Our international
tournament is a tradition in our port and as such is
for the enjoyment of its people. This tournament is
a party and all the town is invited to participate and
enjoy. AS it was usual at the beginnings of the tournament,
we invite the community to attend the inaugural event,
to the ship off and the arrival of the fishermen, to
the anchoring and the weighting ceremony, as well as
to the closing ceremony. All these events are for free
and while you watch the activities you may enjoy a refreshing
drink also courtesy of the tournament. On the other
hand we are preparing a plan so that the fishermen of
Vallarta, specially those who used to participate in
previous years, and who because of economic problems
they don’t participate anymore, we invite them
to come back and compete. In Vallarta we have excellent
fishermen capable of competing with the best in the
world and its sad that they don’t.
PVMirror: During
forty years the tournament represents an economic income
for the city. What is the level of participation and/or
support that the city authorities offer to the Fishing
Club for the organization of the tournament?
RE: With the exception
of when Dr. Calderon donated three gold coins form his
pocket, up to now the authorities have never been involved
in the event. This year, even though there isn’t
yet a specific commitment, there is a good disposition
on behalf of the Mayor Ignacio Guzman to support the
tournament. We have had some talks and we are waiting.
PVMirror: Have you
already made a specific petition to the Mayor?
RE: Not really.
What we did was to present him a document narrating
what the tournament represents and what it has given
to the city in forty seven years without the support
of the city authorities.
A support that we do receive is from the Tourism Trust
(Fideicomiso de Turismo). Trough them each year we promote
the tournament in different magazines of wide distribution
to fishermen in the United States, as the “Marlyn”
magazine among others. This type of help that they grant
us has always been efficient.
The support we request is mainly in the promotion of
the tournament.
PVMirror: Is there
anything more you want to add?
RE: I insist on
my invitation to all the community to join us in our
forty eighth International Sail-fishing Tournament.
For the board of directors and for all the members it
will be an honor to join you and take care of you during
the event.
