APERCH,
the recently formed organization of businesses and residents
in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, held a benefit brunch on
Sunday, Nov. 16 to raise funds for their various activities
for the betterment of the community. The brunch was
held at Philo's Music Studio in La Cruz, and about 150
people attended. Donations totaled more than 16,000
pesos. Attendees listened to the music of Latcho and
Andrea, and Philo and the Shuffle Band while enjoying
brunch dishes prepared by local restaurants and residents.
This past summer, members joined
together to raise funds to hire an employee, Fernando
Rivas, who works 20 hours a week picking up trash in
the town streets. APERCH has also worked with the municipal
government in Valle de Banderas for a more direct entry
into La Cruz, cleaner beaches, and contributions of
cleaning equipment and tools.
When asked about their achievements,
Club President, Aruna Piroshki, said, "I feel that
APERCH has tilled the ground and sown some seeds, arduous
as that was. It will still take perseverance to bring
about major results. The approach to cleaning up the
town has two aspects - the immediate and continuous
cleaning, Fernando's job picking up trash and the placement
of drums in strategic positions, the pressing for the
beach cleanup (all now under way); and the long term/educational
aspect, where we have the participation of two ace students
from la Cruz, a psychology student, Perla Yanina Alarcon
Ortega, and an environmental engineering student, Kaerolik
Combe-Wright, who have committed themselves to bringing
about a cultural change by instigating training programs
for students in the two major tercery educational facilities
here - CETMAR and ITMAR. In relation to the Municipal
government, it has been confirmed by Ing. Juan Cuevas,
the Director of Public Works, that the plans for the
entrance are in final stages. The traffic lights have
been ordered, and the only holdup now is the permission
needed from the Secretary of Communication and Transport.
On future goals, Aruna continued,
"The town centre should be more attractive for
visitors and more representative of the town. There
is the possibility of making a craft market and a museum
and plaques for the historical Huanacaxtle (parota)
trees there. Then there is a big need for a Sports Centre,
and to replace the bullring that was knocked down. APERCH
will also form a committee to promote cultural events
such as: dance classes, poetry reading and language
classes. All this needs lots of input from the residents
and diplomatic planning in cooperation with the local
council.
She concluded, "We were all
thrilled at the cooperation between everyone involved
and the turnout of breakfasters; it was a great success.
A big thanks to Andrea and the Papasitos crew for organising
the catering - and to Philo for the entertainment and
hosting the event!
Other officers of APERCH are : Vice-President,
Maria del Carmen Gutierrez Díaz; Treasurer, Andrea
Kueffner; and Secretary, Carlos Alberto Camarena González.
APERCH meets on the first Wednesday of every month at
8 pm (PV time) on the town plaza for informal discussions.
