San Pancho - Fancy & Colorful

By: Maria Elvia Garcia Palomera & Geno Lamphiear - December 20, 2003.

A few years ago San Pancho used to be a "plain white house town". But lately, color has arrived on the scene. House colors can range from a soft, orange hue all the way to a strong, bright, crimson red. We seem to be in some kind of "mild frenzy" where everyone is painting and planting - presenting the town with colors almost impossible to ignore. Here you may enjoy great, colorful gardens that simply add to the beauty of the casas.

Enter now the mix of colored lights of the Christmas celebration. With all the displays it is easy to run into some breathtaking corners.

San Pancho celebrates Christmas Méxican style starting on December 16 th with 9 days of posadas. These are representations of the times when Joseph and Mary were searching for a place to stay as they were hiding from their oppressors.

Every day the children gather together and travel from house to house asking for posada (which means a place to stay). They stand outside of the houses singing until finally they are allowed to come in for posada and receive presents and / or candy. This goes on for nine days until Christmas Eve. On this day there is a fancy dinner with the whole family.

Christmas is without a doubt the most meaningful time of the year for the residents of San Pancho. On Christmas Eve the children are given presents from the family and later the adults participate in their own previously arranged gift exchange (which adds more to the festivities). On Christmas Day morning the children will look under the pillows or their bed to see what gifts Baby Jesus brought for them. They will play all day with their new presents while the adults enjoy fellowship with one another. If children, for whatever reason, do not receive a present on Christmas, then on the 6 th of January the Three Wise Men return with presents especially for those who did not receive any at Christmas time. Santa Claus is a relatively newcomer for this part of the world.

It is common to hear visitors whispering to themselves as they look around our cobble stone streets; "San Pancho has something that is different from other towns."

Until next week - Merry Christmas!!

San Pancho - Colorido y Caprichoso
