San Pancho - Don Miguel Becerra,
Costa Azul and the "Taj Mahal". Part One

By Elvia & Geno Lamphiear

This article goes with all our love to those who have a special place in their heart for San Pancho. Here is a little history of how the Costa Azul Adventure Hotel, the Residencial Area of Costa Azul as well as the "Taj Mahal" got their start.

Miguel Becerra, born in Amatlan de Canas Nayarit, went to school in Tepic, Nayarit all the way to secondary school. Then he moved to Mexico City where he finished his education. Don Miguel lived in Mexico City for a few years while building the Costa Azul Adventure Resort. He now lives happily married in the beautiful city of Guadalajara with his beautiful wife and children. Don Miguel travels week after week religiously to San Pancho to attend his business.

In1975, during the time that ex-president Echeverria first laid his eyes in this area, San Pancho was a little farming and fishing village. The few casitas were built out of palm trees as cement was then a rare thing. Don Miguel had been looking for a special place - and all of a sudden there it was!. A beautiful beach, the green jungle along with the majestic ocean. So perfect was the setting it was almost a mirage. This was a place where one could run unclothed and not sole would witness it. Don Miguel visited with the town locals exploring the possibilities of this unfound paradise.

Full of ideas he returned to Mexico City. Months later he traveled to the blue coast of France and visited Niza and Montecarlo. The trip was inspiring. He had found the name of his project, the name of the villas - and more.

Costa Azul

Don Miguel always held onto his vision of building a small but beautiful, exclusive hotel along with a residential development. He dreamed of a place that would do justice to the beauty of the area yet not be intrusive. During this time Don Miguel pondered about how he could accomplish this. He started inviting people to share his discovery and his dream. Don Miguel offered 150 timeshare memberships for people to enjoy. His associates were mostly from Mexico City and Guadalajara.

In 1978 the building of five family oriented villas started. As time passed his dream began taking shape and becoming clearer. With the support of the people of the town, a road, water, electricity and the feeling of been on the right track made Don Miguel proud of his accomplishments. Don Miguel is a personality who's presence we still admire and enjoy today. He is in fact one of the great pioneers of San Pancho.

San Pancho - Don Miguel Becerra,
Costa Azul y el Taj Mahal. Parte I
