The beaches of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle are cleaner today

The beaches of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle are cleaner today, thanks to APERCH, the association of businesses and residents of La Cruz. On Saturday, October 23, APERCH organized a beach clean-up day to clean the beach in front of Dos Felipes Restaurant to the plaza, a distance of about two blocks.
About thirty APERCH members and residents bagged trash, trimmed trees and cut weeds and grass. The refuse included broken boats and fishing debris left on the beach from Hurricane Kenna, as well as a broken metal bed frame, a brake drum, an old gate, and other unidentifiable refuse that had remained on the beach for months, perhaps years. The workers were assisted by Ing. Luis Enrique Davalos Flores, a teacher at ITMAR Bahia de Banderas, and his students, as well as ITMAR students from the turtle camp in Nuevo Vallarta. All together, about ten truck loads of trash, plant trimmings and debris were hauled away. A second clean-up day is being planned for mid-November.
This effort is in conjunction with the on-going street cleaning project, now in its third week, being sponsored by APERCH. Residents are making donations to pay the wages of three workers to remove sand, rocks, weeds and other debris. After a project earlier this year to replace sewage pipes, the streets were torn up and piles of sand, dirt and rocks were left behind from the work. In some cases, the cobble stones were not replaced where the new pipe was buried. The rocks and dirt are being removed, and future plans include reparing the cobble stone streets. Philo Hayward, owner of Philo's Music Studio, Dr. Forrest Martin, and Ron and Bonnie Morningstar have each donated 2,500 pesos to initiate the street clean-up.
It has been observed that people have a tendancy to throw refuse on the beach where there is already a pile of garbage and junk. Now it is hoped that the residents will contunue to care for the newly cleaned beach area by following the admonition to "Tirar Basura en su Lugar".
There will be a general assembly meeting of APERCH on Tuesday, November 9, at CETMAR in La Cruz to discuss local planning developments. We invite all concerned to attend this meeting. In addition, residents of La Cruz are invited to meet on the plaza on the first Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. (Nayarit) to discuss current and future projects covering cleanliness, urban delvelopment, the projected marina, and a sports center.
