FROM THE NORTH SHORE

San Pancho News
By: Elvia & Geno Lamphiear – February 2006

Over the years we have had several well meaning people start or talk about important community projects.  Some of the projects actually came to be realized – others fell by the wayside for one reason or another.

We would like to introduce to you to Nicole Swedlow. A young mother of two beautiful children, Nicole is proving herself to be a quite a “Powerhouse” & a person who can get things done!

Right now Nicole is undertaking THREE projects at the same time!

In this months article we will share with you, the readers, Nicoles’ plan for a library (Biblioteca San Pancho) in San Pancho:

“Biblioteca San Pancho”

The community of playa San Francisco (San Pancho), Nayarit is united in its desire to have a library.  Biblioteca San Pancho is a community sponsored undertaking with support from all major local establishments, local government officials and permanent residents as well as wide support from the foreign resident community.

• Vision:
To create a library that reflects the community of San Pancho with a special focus on offering reading and literacy opportunities for children.

We plan to provide a quality collection of books in both Spanish and English, free Internet Access, a media center and a homework tutoring center.

In the future, we hope to expand our services to include spaces for cultural events, public demonstrations and meetings, classes and education centers.

• Mission:
The mission of Biblioteca San Pancho is to provide quality materials and services which fulfill educational, informational, cultural and recreational needs of the entire community in an atmosphere that is welcoming and respectful.

• General objectives of biblioteca San Pancho:

  1. To serve all residents of the community in San Pancho.
  1. To acquire and make available to all residents books, periodicals, pamphlets, and other services as will address their needs to:

a) become literate
b) become well informed
c) locate answers to important questions
d) cultivate the imagination and creative expression
e) develop skills for career and vocational advancement
f) enjoy leisure by means of reading and other media services.

  1. To acquire the means to provide the most frequently requested material locally and upon demand.

  1. To maintain a program of service which locates information, guides reading, organizes and interprets material for people of various backgrounds, and stimulates thinking and intellectual development in individuals of any age.
  1. To strive consistently to discover new methods and improvements for better service for the library’s customers

• Specific Ojectives of Biblioteca San Pancho:

  1. To provide consistent bilingual services that addresses the needs of both the Spanish and English speaking populations.
  1. To emphasize and focus resources on improving literacy for all members of the community; including early literacy, improved literacy and adult literacy.
  1. To maintain an extensive collection of language learning materials (for both English and Spanish learners) and opportunities including classes, computer programs and tutoring.
  1. To make children reading a priority by maintaining a quality collection of children’s books in Spanish and allocating significant resources towards youth outreach.
  1. To consistently promote community unity, mutual responsibility and equality in all library programs.
  1. To expand services as necessary and requested by the community.

Nicole held a very productive meeting regarding the library on January 18th, 2006.  To date the most important issue is the location of the library.  It appears we will be able to build a library on a corner lot of the secondary school property on the main street of San Pancho.

For more information, suggestions and or donations regarding the library, please contact Nicole Swedlow at: nrswedlow@gmail.com

We will tell you more about this wonderful lady, Nicole, and her work on other projects here in San Pancho in future articles.

Until next time!
