Let’s Go fishing…
By The First International Marlin & Tuna Fishing Tournament Riviera Nayarit
Nayarit has very unique people in a friendly community who are always willing to show all the wonders of their land. If we focus on the title of this article, we can think of “catching” the history of the towns and the traditions of the people which are enviable because they still keep “the essence” which is known only by a few. In addition, Nayarit has mountain views from the Sierra Madre Occidental, and streams rich in fauna and flora that are excellent for the growth of species like shrimp.
The “Gran Nayar” territory runs through the states of Sinaloa, Durango, and Jalisco, and there we can find populations known as “Los Coras”, “Los Huicholes”, “Los Mexicaneros”, “Los Tepehuanes”, possibly all from a single family tree but with different last names and traditions. They live throughout the state in small groups so it is not difficult to find them and, with a little luck, even to co-habit with them.
Nayarit has large expanses of agricultural and ranch land as well as some lagoons in the area called “Lerma-Santiago”. However, the land in this region tends to slope towards the ocean so let’s go to the coast and then, let’s throw our lines and lures.
Nayarit has a vast variety of fish which provide exciting challenges to the sport-fishing community. There are endless opportunities to win a trophy, and time spent on the ocean is always memorable, with or without the fishing experience.
These are some of the many reasons we are celebrating our First International Fishing Tournament for marlin and tuna in the month on July in Riviera Nayarit, and you are cordially invited. Let us describe some of the species you would be likely to catch to compete for the trophy .
Three species of marlin are normally found during the entire year, except for the months of June and July. El “Marlin Rayado”, or “Striped Marlin” isavailable for 5 months, from July though November, while el “Marlin Negro”, or the “Black Marlin”, also comes in July but leaves in February. El “Marlin Azul”, or “Blue Marlin”, arrives during the same time as the “Black Marlin”, but this one stays until the month of April.
As for tuna, it is common to find the “Atun Gigante” or Gigantic Tuna along our coasts, and it can measure close to 2 meters and weigh up to 200 kgs., although the normal average weight is 35 kgs. It is a fish that is hard to catch. Another of the species that live in this area is called “Atun Aleta Amarilla”, or “Yellow fin Tuana”, and those who have seen how can it possibly fit in that little can!
From May to September you can find the “Grouper” swimming in the reefs and cays. They normally weigh 20 kgs. But don’t be surprised if you find one that can be more that 40 kgs. El “Dorado” or “Mahi Mahi”. Is another specie that is sought affect as a trophy because it is delicious, and it is truly beautiful because its colors stand out and are greatly appreciated.
There is no doubt that there is great variety in the fish we can, find, but one that will always be considered a go-getters is “Pez Vela”, known for its harpoon-shaped bill and its marvelous fin that is really spectacular. Once it bites it is a good idea to have a camera prepared to capture the impressive battle, especially when the fish flies at an incredible speed to try to get away .
But in every case, let’s not even think about being defeated if what you pursue is the trophy, Let’s focus on the opportunity of experiencing the joy when we announce “Let’s go Fishing”, and the crucial moment when we just simply face a specie that has the same opportunity as we do to inhabit this wonderful world that we know as “Planet earth”, and the special corner of that planet called Nayarit.
