Nuevo Vallarta’s Estudio Café:
Epicenter of creativeness and freethinking By Florelisa Hernández • Photos by Jesús de Avila • April 2009.
Federico Leon de la Vega’s writings caught my attention, it amazed me his capacity to share his intimacy, through reading him I found myself sharing his states of mind, his joy, despair, and all the feelings he goes through as he lives a life of ups and downs as the multitalented character he is: a designer, writer, ecologist, altruist, and painter.
At the end of our conversation I concluded Federico creates himself over and over, he is the main character of a life filled with amazing coincidences, one of the luckiest for Banderas Bay visitors and residents as well is the establishment of his Nuevo Vallarta Estudio Cafe, a place that reminds me of the old bohemian masters, white and impressionist like the style that permeates the works of his only male inhabitant, (his clan is a women only one, that includes the cats)
Upon his arrival to Nuevo, the word spread soon and fellow artists joined him to create the first open air studio, while the Estudio Cafe was being built, since its beginnings, the place attracted artists and thinkers, nature lovers,” people came to see us paint, to enjoy our food that was very simple, yet tasty and served on a peaceful environment”
Probably his most known painting in Vallarta is the mural "Tangerines” that used to be at the Bianco Restaurant (presently closed and the mural on sale by his owner Martin Good).
Samples of his work of different formats can be found in Mexico and other countries, where he used to live, he states:” With my work I have paid my children’s education, cars, my credit cards, we have gone on vacation and came back with more money, I also built the Estudio and home”, so it is not surprising to find his art in public places like churches, and convention centers, and also in the houses and offices of characters of all walks of life, tycoons, deans, politicians, chauffeurs, writers, journalists, and painters as well.
He is a true artist when it comes to merchandise his work, fact that leads me to believe that his paintings are a currency stronger than the Euro, and that the certainty of knowing what one was made for, and act accordingly, can save any human a lot of headache and precious time that often is devoted to efforts and actions that have a dead end…
In his own words: “If by chance the reader is longing for a drastic chance in her or his life, I suggest two readings for inspiration: from the Bible, John 10:10 ...about abundant life and Henry David Thoreau's "Walden Pond". True Riches are well hidden from merely economic spirits.
Since its beginnings in 2001 and every year the Estudio Cafe presents diverse activities all year round: The art exhibit” Estero El Salado”, “Natura Nayarit”, and the Nayarit Network breakfast, are few of the events displayed here.
However, the favorite is the Christmas concert, when the Estudio Cafe gets all dressed up and ready to receive friends and visitors from all over.
Every December Luli, Federico, Victoria and Lupita open the doors of the Estudio and their hearts to an increasing number of people that get together to enjoy the Christmas Carols with invited musicians, followed by a tasty and well served Christmas dinner.
Such a bountiful life is only possible thanks to the attitude of this family, as they believe that nothing remains the same,, that art and style, and maybe life also, are made of fortunate mistakes, a clan that finds their strength and inspiration in the 4Bible.
In his words. “To come to the point where I could properly express how I now feel abundantly rich I had to describe my previous circumstances and thoughts, and the process by which I arrived at the present. Our life in the big city, full of stress and haste, has been exchanged for another life, with meaningful work and time to share with loved ones, and which I value so much thanks to the great effort it took us to get to where we now are. I live from doing what I am, work defines the man: I am a painter artist.
