| An
out of the ordinary family. | | by SS
- March 16, 2003. | Cita de fulanito. I
met Wayland, Aruna and Kaerolik Combe-Wright last summer, funny as it was, they
had been living in La Cruz for around 10 years, and I had never run into them
before. Although I had heard stories about the out of
the ordinary English couple that with baby Kaerolik sailed the seas on a paper
boat, I was never curious enough to find out who they were, until last summer
when a friend took me to their place. I
have heard their story on more than one occasion, and every time I listen to it,
I find it as exciting as the first time, I keep discovering new meanings and learning
new facts about the way some people choose to live.
In
the surface they do not seem very different from the rest of us, in fact we share
the same problems and worries, I guess the difference is that they never forgot
their dreams and transformed them into their daily life. People
like them remind me of the Renaissance artists, because they are like the old
masters, multi-talented, and true masters of their trade, to say the least. To
write their story would be a time consuming task, they have done so much, and
still have many plans for the future. The
good news are that after a very fruitful meeting and a wonderful evening listening
to their stories and admiring one of the most extraordinary huichol art collection
I have ever seen, Wayland agreed to tell us their story. He will be delivering
his tale in parts, and promised to accompany it with multicolored pictures.
He
will tell us in his own words and very peculiar sense of humor all the things
they have done and experienced. From the Mexican taco
stand in London, the two year making of the paper boat, their time in Costa Rica,
Nicaragua, their arrival to Mexican coasts, their work with Huichol and San Juan
Chamula Indians, their community programs, the huichol gallery with the extraordinary
works of José Benítez, and their latest efforts as successful entrepreneurs
of La Cruz. You
can find them at Coral 66 in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle running their multi-specialties
business; they are open Monday-Saturday from 9:00 to 6:00.
Their
enchanting property is comprised of small talleres: Wayland´s carpentry,
Alma's huichol shoe and belt factory, on the upper plant the unique printed Hikuri
Huichol T-Shirts, there is also the Huichol gallery displaying José Benitez
yarn paintings and many other huichol art objects, and finally the Octopus Garden,
cafeteria and beer bar that is open Monday- Saturday for Breakfast and Lunch. Untill
next time... SS An
