FROM THE SOUTH SHORE

EXPLORING THE SOUTH

The first from the south
By John Van Dyke • February 2010

This is the first of what will hopefully be many monthly dispatches from South of Puerto Vallarta.

Tehua BeachWhat I call South is an area that is just now being discovered by a fortunate few - El Tuito and the beach areas of, Mayto, Tehuamixtle, Villa del Mar, Ipala, and beyond. The areas past El Tuito are now a one-hour drive, and Tuito is one hour from Vallarta. A few years ago the road beyond El Tuito was strictly four-wheel drive and that was even a challenge. The dirt road has been greatly improved from El Tuito in the last four years and is now being paved little by little. For many, this is just about right. Accessible, but a little off the beaten path. However, there is no doubt that the road will continue to be surfaced as interest in this amazing pristine area grows. Some say it will be finished in the next two years.

This is one of the last frontiers along the Pacific Coast of Mexico in the state of Jalisco, and it has the attention of both, the state and federal government as well as private investors. It also is not lost on the locals that a lot of new people are showing up, to visit, to buy, or just enjoy the area. It is the beginning of a new tourist economy.

For those who are a bit adventurous and longing for a walk on endless pristine beaches, or love fresh seafood, and oysters, or just want to escape the crowds of tourists, this area will surprise and delight you. It is a pleasant long day trip or a great overnight outing from Puerto Vallarta. With all the late rains, everything is still green this January and worth seeing. The drive south is always beautiful.

Mayto BeachDriving - take highway 200 south to El Tuito, turn into El Tuito and head to the plaza. At the end of the plaza take a left - you will see a sign. There is a patch of cobble and dirt street that becomes pavement; you are now on the road to Mayto. You can also take a bus to El Tuito, and there is bus service to Mayto when it is running.
