EXPLORING THE SOUTH
On the road to Mayto Beach
For those who don’t know about this gem – Mayto Beach is a pristine expanse of beach that goes a far as the eye can see. At the moment there is virtually nothing but beach! You will find access to the beach, the turtle camp, two hotels, and a rental house at the south end of the beach. Most people call this whole area ‘Mayto’, however, Mayto is really the small community before you turn off towards the beach. There is an interesting story about how Mayto was named and why it is sometimes spelled Maito. If you speak Spanish, find Santiago in the second little store on the left as you pass through. He can tell you - he was one of the original founders of the community of Mayto.
Mayto is about a one-hour drive from El Tuito. The road is partially surfaced and there are plans to complete this project soon. My favorite time to drive is early in the morning when the first light is hitting the hills and trees and the air is fresh. It is a beautiful drive with a reward at the end. When you reach the community of Llano Grande, you are about halfway. A couple of rough patches of road may give you second thoughts, but press on, and know why the beaches are so pristine. Hotel Mayto has put up a few signs at key spots along the way; this is where you want to end up, at the beach.
Mayto Hotel and Hotel Rinconcito are your best bets for a place to stay. I like both. Mayto Hotel has a very beautiful pool and setting, right at the beach. A surprise in this rural area. They have twelve rooms, a restaurant and bar. Tucked away next door is Hotel Rinconcito - smaller with six rooms. It is very family style with English speaking hosts. Rinconcito has plenty to drink, offers home cooked meals, special requests for grilled fish, and if the vegetable truck is due, ask Mary to make Chile Rellenos. A personal favorite.
The Easter holiday is about to start, so expect a lot of people during that time. Not the best time to experience the true qualities of this special place, however, there are never bad days at Mayto beach, some are just better than others.
