Vallarta Golf Cup

4th Golf Cup Vallarta – review of the event
By Editor - December 2005 - Leer Español

The 4th Golf Cup Vallarta – a PRO-AM tournament – started officially with a spectacular registration night.

On this occasion the host golf courses of the tournament were El Tigre of Paradise Village located in Nuevo Vallarta and the Vista Vallarta golf course designed by Jack Nikclaus, where professional and prestigious tournaments have been celebrated. They are spectacular courses offering magnificent sceneries as well as challenges that not everybody was able to surpass.

During the two days of competition in addition to sportsmanship and camaraderie, a tension could be perceived at the same time in some of the golf players that were truly and completely focused on playing under par.

The weather prevailing during the tournament was warm with a good dosage of humidity which contributed to the fact that the wear and tear in some players was larger than expected. During the first day the par three on the El Tigre golf course were challenging and in hole number two with only one shot, the amateur Brett Esties came within only ninety-six centimeters of the flag, thus being the player who was closest to achieving the hole in one during all the three pars of the course.

The excitement was raising its level during the second day at the  Vista Vallarta and the one hundred and twelve golf players, distributed in twenty-eight teams, did the best they could in order to achieve putting themselves in the first places. This day it was the amateur Manuel Escoto who was closest in obtaining a hole in one. In hole number fifteen with only one shot he was fifty-six centimeters away from the flag.

The format of the tournament was set up in teams of four golf players consisting of one professional and three amateurs, and this was definitely the pepper which gave the competition a special flavor. During the whole trajectory we could always hear how the team players constantly helped and encouraged each other even if one of them did not hit the ball as desired. It was observed how at some holes some of the professionals took risks in order to perform almost impossible shots with the purpose of recuperating or improving the positions on the board.

At the end the winners of the tournament was the team made up of the professional Oscar Serna accompanied by the amateurs Sam Wilson, John Winchester and Juan Marquez. They ended the competition with a total of 255, only one less than the team that positioned itself in the second place.

The best qualified professional as champion of the tournament was Octavio González with a grand total of 138, six under par. Oscar Serna and Manuel Inman tied for second place with a total of 139, while Daniel de Leon positioned himself in 4th place with 140. This definitely confirmed how tight the competition had been.

The last round ended approximately at six in the afternoon and all players gathered very close to the practice range of Vista Vallarta in order to share together and to celebrate the award ceremony which was cram-full of an excellent humor generated by the jokes between the golf players. During the award of the prizes it was inevitable not to notice the joy that reigned amongst the organizing committee which was led by Mr. Luis Angarita. He served as toast master thanking the players in a very emotional way for their attendance and he was especially grateful for all the sponsors who were directly responsible that the tournament could be carried out and that it was a complete success, handing out more than six hundred thousand dollars in prizes.

Almost at the end of the event the notification was given that everything is on track for the organization of the 5th Golf Cup Vallarta. Apparently the attendance of professional players from other countries has already been confirmed. Indisputably this tournament is getting better every year equally attracting the attention of more international golf players each year. I have the sensation that very soon famous characters of the professional golf world will start to attend this tournament…. who knows maybe one of these days Tiger Woods will feel motivated to win himself a luxury condominium or maybe he will be motivated to be the winner just to take a picture with the atractive hostesses!

In the meantime we will see us next year… fore!
