The world is watching!

December 10-15.2002. The World will be watching Puerto Vallarta. To be more specific over 200 million viewers from more than 140 countries worldwide will be tuned in to watch 48 of the worlds best golfers compete. The effects of this type of event can not be quantified as of yet. This will definitely draw attention to, and change how, Puerto Vallarta is viewed, not to mention place it on the map as a golf destination. To date there have been numerous campaigns in Mexico and The USA, as we get closer there will be even more attention drawn to the event and to Puerto Vallarta.

What is the EMC World Cup anyway? Not everyone is a golfer and quite frankly many can't understand why some people think it is a big deal. Since the beginning of time sports have been a means of bringing different people of different backgrounds, languages and nationalities together to partake in friendly competition. Like the Olympics, and the world cup of cocker this EMC World Cup has teams representing various countries. There is no greater pride than to be chosen to represent a nation. Knowing that you are not only representing yourself but a whole nation. Thousands of people who have nothing in common with the player or know very little about golf will be transformed and rooting for the two men who have the honor to represent their country. The World Cup began in 1953 when John Hopkins ht e founder of international golf, created the first tournament in Montreal, Canada. Since then it has been played in 14 countries and still upholds to the original slogan " International Goodwill Through Golf".

To put it into Soccer terms it is like the World Cup however one difference being there are only two men representing each country. They compete each day throughout four days and the team with the lowest score at the end of the four days wins the John Hopkins Trophy and $1 million dollars. There are other similarities, in golf there are golfers that have animal names just as in soccer. In soccer there is "Toro" Vieri from Italy, "Conejo" Perez from Mexico, "Burrito" Ortega from Argentina and "Pajaro" Morales from Mexico. In golf there is "Tiger" Woods from the USA, "Gato" Romero from Argentina, "Pato" Cabrera from Argentina, "Shark" Greg Norman from Australia, and the "Bear"Jack Nicklaus from the USA.

What is golf? Why is it such a big deal? Why do people get so excited about spending 4 hours chasing a little white ball with a bag full of sticks? Golf has been described as a good walk spoiled. It is a mental game more than a physical game. People often womder why golf is so popular with business people or why deals are made on the gold course. Why people who golf together have a special bond. Golf is a game where you do chase a white ball for approximately 3-4 hours trying to get it into a small hole, 18 different times. What happens during that time is 4 people are joined together to achieve the same mission simultaneously yet individually. It is competitive but the number one competitor is yourself first against the course. Probably the nicest thing is that you spend 3-4 hours with 3 other people in a natural setting, talking, laughing, encouraging, without any interruptions, no phone calls, waiters, secretaries, children, traffic, noise or visual distractions. In this day and age there are few places this can be accomplished. On the golf course it is just you your 3 companions, trees, sand, water and a lot of green grass. Golf of a game based on traditions, sportsmanship, honor and pride. There is no pushing or fouls. You are competing against yourself, the course and then the other players.

Professional players are only paid if they perform on that given day. There are no multimillion dollar contracts for 5 years for playing with a team. You are your own team. Representing yourself first your country and the game of golf. Diplomats. What these professionals do effects how the game is perceived and played.

In the same vain Puerto Vallarta has a responsibility to show the world who and what they are and what they represent. Whenever an event of this magnitude comes to a city it is transformed. There will be people from all over the world, press, professional, athletes, spectators, and celebrities. Apart from the financial benefits and all the efforts that go into the upkeep of the city to make it look spectacular it transforms each and every person into a diplomat representing their city. The EMC World Cup is proud to be in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico this year and looks forward to memorable experience for all.
