LETTERS TO EDITOR

August 3, 2003

Dear Editor,

Having moved South of the border with my family over one year ago to what I had considered to be a better life, I have been frustrated time after time with the apparent double standards that exist when dealing with many business owners, officials and police.

Do they think all Gringo's are wealthy? I assume so because I am overcharged or fined on many occasions and I compare my fees and bills with my Mexican friends. Not a particularly friendly business environment for many Americans and tourists alike…

I recently tried to rent an office at Neptune Plaza and was asked for 6 months’ rent in advance on top of 6 months maintenance fees. I paid three months’ deposit and after reviewing the contract (which I did not sign) I asked for my deposit back.

“Sorry Señor, there will be a one month penalty.”
“For what?” I asked. No answer.

This is in direct contravention of many Mexican laws and regulations. When will this victimization of "Gringos" end?

Just chalk it up to another one of life's experiences here in beautiful P.V.

Dear Editor,

This is in response to Diane R.'s letter regarding her inability to access the Discovery Channel. It comes in on my TV on channel 36. You just have to go surfing sometimes!

Also, I would like to let you know that there is a out of the way jewel of a restaurant in colonia Lopez Mateos. It is called "Duenas" and is absolutely delightful. Family run with excellent food, good service, and reasonable prices. They have the best steak with pepper sauce I have had in Vallarta, and if you like shrimp you will be a happy diner here. Even
Their lobster thermidor is lower priced than I have seen it here, and it is yummy!

Try the blue crab empanadas for an appetizer and you will order them every visit. I guarantee you will return once you have discovered this gift for your palate. The address is Rio Grande 365 in the colonia Lopez Mateos and their phone number is 222-6698. Out of the big tunnel heading west, turn at the CMQ farmacia across from Cruz Roja, go one block then make a right and then a left and it will be on your left halfway up the block. Try it, you won't be sorry.

Dear Editor,

Just wanted to say that even tho' I am home in Canada for the 6 warmer months, every week I look up the PV Mirror on the internet to see what’s happening.

Always there is a nice picture to enjoy.

I heard via email that there has been an accident on Olas Altas between a truck and four tourists who were crossing the street to Andale’s.

Yes, this is tragic, but I hope before the city rushes in to remove the outside tables along the street that much thought is given to the ambience of this particular area.

I live in Canada for the 6 months when the weather is agreeable, and spend the rest of the year travelling through the southern US and into Mexico. Some of the time is spent in Vallarta’s old town, just up the hill from Andale’s.

We crisscross this street, moving from outside table to outside table, drinking mostly coffee, visiting and people watching. These little coffee houses are part of what makes the area so inviting.

We need to keep a perspective on this unfortunate event. It was an accident that could have happened even if the tables were not there.
