Dear Editor,
After reading your recent letters
from readers regarding unfair treatment of Gringos,
I once again hear that little voice in my head screaming
"STOP WHINING!".
My God! After reading the complaints
from some of the "visitors" living here, you
would think that there are huge lynch mobs out there
chasing down us Gringos to rob, cheat and steal from.
I would suggest that if the people
who wrote those letters would stop acting like the victims
of some huge conspiracy to "get the gringos and
make their lives miserable", they would find that
a lot of the behavior that they think is targeted for
Gringos is, in fact, the same behavior that the locals
have to put up with in this town as well.
I am not saying that the problems
of overcharged bills, high prices and corruption don’t
exist in Vallarta but I can guarantee you that it is
not exclusively a "Gringo thing!"
By playing the discrimination card
they are not only insulting the loving Mexican people
that graciously allow us to live in their home but they
draw attention away from the real issues of overcharges
bills, high prices and corruption and make it a personal
issue.
Having lived here for more than 18
years I have to state that I have never felt singled
out for any negative behaviour just because I am a foreigner
but maybe, just maybe, that is because I have never
felt or acted like I was a "Gringo".
Thank you

Hola,
My name is Betina and I would like
to know if there is work for volunteers in Puerto Vallarta.
I read that one woman is working in Casa Hogar. I am
an art therapist and I love to work with children.
At this time, I am working with
children in Queretaro, but I am not very happy with
the organization here. Thus I am looking for other options.
Muchas gracias for your time,
Betina
Dear Betina,
There is always a great need for volunteers in Puerto
Vallarta and they are all much appreciated. If you are
interested in checking out Casa Hogar, you may get in
touch with Elisa Cornejo there by dialing 01-322-221-1908
from Queretaro.

Dear Editor,
I believe this may be of interest
to your readers. The Red Planet is about to become a
spectacular sight! This month and next, Earth is catching
up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in
the closest approach between the two planets in recorded
history. The next time Mars may come this close is in
2287.
The encounter will culminate on August
27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth
and will be the brightest except for the moon in the
night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will
appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest 75-power
magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon
to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the
beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10 p.m.
and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.
By the end of August when the two
planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and
reach its highest point in the night sky at 12:30a.m.
That's pretty convenient to see something that no human
being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar
at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively
brighter and brighter throughout the month.
NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE
THIS AGAIN

Dear Editor,
Good day!
I always read with great interest those articles written
by Prof. Fabio Cupul. In your Tribune edition of Aug.4-10th,
it was mentioned that he is the founder of the Cipactli
Reptile Sanctuary "located a little north of Puerto
Vallarta". I’ve lived here in Vallarta for
more than 15 years and have no idea as to where I may
find this magical place.
Could you please be a bit more specific
as reptiles ARE my thing!? Would love to go there but
with a better idea in my mind as to "where",
north of PV. Thank you very much for your time and efforts,
Pam W.
Dear Pam,
Professor Cupul tells us that
if we want to go visit the reptile sanctuary, we must
drive north past the bus terminal (central camionera).
The next intersection is the one for Las Juntas. Turn
right as if you were heading for Ixtapa. Some 3 km.
later, you will reach an intersection with a huge billboard
for the Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUC). The
entrance to the university is about 500 m. down that
road.
Please note that the university
is closed right now, so you’ll have to wait a
couple of weeks for it to open, along with the reptile
sanctuary which is located within the university’s
property.

Dear Editor,
Maybe it's the weather, but I'm feeling
a little cranky. What's with these new water bottles?
They have build-in handles that displace water and yet
we still pay $16! And why the brownouts every afternoon?
If CFE can't provide electricity for the few of us,
I guess we should be thankful the town isn't full of
tourists.

Dear Editor,
I stay every year at the Hotel Marsol
in front of the pier on Playa Los Muertos. I'm trying
to make a reservation there and one site says that this
hotel is closed. Does anyone know if they are really
closed?
I looked at every local news in your
archive, and there was no mention of it closing that
I could find. Thank you,
Sherry B.
Dear Sherry,
We went to check out the hotel. It is alive and well
and you could contact them by sending a fax to: + 52
+ 322 + 222-0865. The phone numbers are 222-1365 and
222-0453.
The gentleman at the reception desk admitted that their
internet site is not really “active”…
