This is for Anna,
I enjoy your weekly commentary...
much better news than the press releases found in the
Local News section. On restaurant reviews, criticism
comes with the territory and you are absolutely correct...
not all restaurants perform well on every dish and humans
do have off days. We had dinner at La Petite France
on our anniversary Saturday night. The food was delicious
and beautifully presented, the wait staff friendly and
excellent, and they went out of their way to make a
special day memorable.

Dear Editor,
I've misplaced the article you ran
about recycling - I think it mentioned aluminum and
newspapers. Could you publish the location(s), materials
taken and prices again?
Want to Recycle
Dear recycler,
Residents and visitors to Puerto
Vallarta can personally deliver metal refuse to:
COMPRA Y VENTA DE CHATARRA (Armando
Gutierrez is the owner), San Salvador No. 234, Col.
5 de Diciembre, Tel: 223-2570. Monday-Friday: 9-14hrs,
16-19hrs., Saturday from 9 to 16hrs., Closed Sunday.
They will receive the following metals and in May, they
were paying the following prices: Copper - $8. Pesos
/ kilo, Aluminum - $5. to $7. / kilo, Bronze - $5. /
kilo, Batteries - $5. to 10. Pesos per battery
Also, old newspapers can be delivered
to Doña Clementina who lives in front of the
C.E.C.A.T.I. Hotel on Guerrero Street, next to Trio
Restaurant. She donates money she receives from the
recycling of newspapers to a seminary school.

To Roburto, our reader who wanted
to know about the presence of fire ants in the Vallarta
area, this is the answer Professor Cupul received from
Patricia Rojas, M. Sc. at the Department of Soil Biology
of the Institute of Ecology in Xalapa, Veracruz:
To date, there have been no published reports of Solenopsis
in our country. However María Luisa Jiménez
(Baja California specialist in spiders) did find some
in La Paz.
Another entomologist told me
he had collected some in Chihuahua. In all my own collection
trips throughout eastern and southeastern Mexico, I
have never come across any. That is why I can say that
if there are any, their presence is very, very rare.
There have been no reports of any sightings in the state
of Jalisco.
To summarize, I believe that
this reader can rest at ease with regard to this species.
There is another species (Solenopsis geminata) widely
distributed throughout the American tropics and which
has been reported in Jalisco, but it is not aggressive
like the fire ant and generally only represents a problem
for farmers.
