For Anna,
We came to PV again this year, and
again fell in love with your city and its people. We
arrived on August 30th and left on September 19th. We
loved the pride your city showed on Monday, September
15th, El Día de la Independencia. It was so much
like New Year’s Eve in New York City...
We hope to return again next year,
if not sooner. We love it in PV and would love to move
there and live. I read the letters every week and look
forward to your honest and witty reports.
Thanks for being our eyes in PV until
we return.
Thanks,
Jim Gribble
Dear Editor,
Due to complaints made to PROFECO
(Federal Consumer Protection Agency) by purchasers of
merchandise offered by Telmex that prove defective,
Telmex has posted the following notice:
“Product Guarantee - Telmex informs you that all
products purchased in the Tienda (store) Telmex are
of the highest quality and are guaranteed for whatever
factory defect or malfunctioning of its parts. * Telmex
Products, 1 year *Other brands, 30 days in the store,
after this time, the purchaser must deal directly with
the distributor of that brand.
For the guarantee to be valid it is necessary to present
product with:
- Bill of sale
- In original packing
-All corresponding accessories included (cables, batteries
etc.)
At Telmex we wish to offer you the best service.
Thank you for your Attention.”
This notice was posted because of
an incident of an individual buying a computer through
Telmex ... me. Sounded like a good deal, monthly payments,
tax deductible, Prodigy included. It would have been
except the computer froze up during set up and the mouse
was skittering all over the screen. This was on a Friday
evening. After waiting until Monday morning as per instruction
included and connecting with the computer company's
service technician in Mexico City, 5 telephone calls,
2 faxes, an e-mail, and re-install the programs 5 times
as instructed by technicians and two local computer
business people assisting, the computer still froze
up.
Returning the computer with all the
above mentioned, Telmex refused to take any responsibility,
either to exchange or cancel the contract. The Tiendas
Telmex clerks said that the individual purchaser had
to deal directly with the distributor in Mexico City,
shipping costs paid by the buyer. This was not a satisfactory
answer.
A trip to PROFECO was the only solution.
The Profeco clerk took my information filled out a complaint
and set a hearing date. One hearing down, another hearing
to come, plus a follow-up when a decision is made.
But their sign indicates that the
employees were under the impression that the company
had a different policy on that day.
For any such disputes bring all bills
and paper work to the PROFECO office, corner of Pricilla
no Sanchez and Aramara (the first signal on road to
Pitillal past Sam’s). The office is upstairs.
Bring someone who speaks Spanish, often but not always
is there someone available who speaks English. If they
consider it a valid complaint, they will file a complaint
and set up a hearing date and time. They claim a 97%
solution rate. Hours Monday through Friday 9 am-2 p.m.
Tel: 225-0018, 225-000.
Still Computerless
For Anna,
Just read your gossip on tacos. For
us local people, we are accustomed to the ingredients.
Most of the old timers have used steer heads or pork
heads and boiled in water to skin all the meat then
chop them altogether.
As Vallarta grew, people wanted better
tacos so came the beef and pork tongues. Then it became
too expensive, so I introduced beef and pork lips which
became very popular with the natives.
That was part of my livelihood here in Vallarta.
Hasta luego,
Chico
