LETTERS TO EDITOR

March 9, 2003

Dear Editor,

This is yet another letter about the "bus issue".

I must say, I like the fact that I don't have to wait 20 minutes for a bus like I was doing when they decided to crack down on the system. OR that I don't have to walk all the way home from Parque Hidalgo!

And I enjoyed the article stating that most people wanting a decrease in bus volume were those who drive in their cars solo, clogging up the traffic etc. etc. I agree with this writer!

I use the bus EVERYDAY and yes, they are noisy, they pollute and they can be dangerous drivers etc.. In fact, I heard another person was killed just last week, in front of Mariachi Loco.

There is DEFINITELY a problem that needs to be addressed and I think paying COMMISSION to drivers is part of the problem. This payment incentive promotes road racing!!

I know there is a better system out there but let's face it, perhaps this "better" system, doesn't "SHOW THEM THE MONEY"!

Why don't we just face the facts? If buses have been able to run WITHOUT permits or license plates, it's because the HIGHER POWERS are allowing this to happen. And all the griping and fussing will not change anything UNTIL the power shifts.

These are just me two pesos worth.

Dear Editor,

This is in reference to the letter to the editor from Mrs. Vina Vandervelde

Mrs. Vina Vandervelde, you may feel safe riding P.V. bus lines, but do you feel safe standing on a sidewalk, waiting to cross the street? While a bus comes out of nowhere, flying around the corner, coming up on the sidewalk and running over a pedestrian, would you still feel safe with the bus lines then? My cousin which was just like a sister to me, was killed doing just that on February 22, 2003.

As far as leaving the Mexican people alone, something obviously needs to be done, there have been too many accidents! If it were your husband, child, or family member, I believe you would have a change of heart! This matter of the bus systems definitely needs to be looked into by the proper authorities. Yes, we are visitors to this country, and I'm sure that they also visit other countries that they do not belong to. they have the advantage to feel safe coming to a regulated country. They can feel safe crossing the street or standing on a sidewalk, yes, there are accidents that occur all over the world, but this one could have possibly been avoided if there were regulations with the bus systems in P.V. Mexico.

So maybe next year when you return something will have been done, and yourself and your family will feel safe standing on a street corner!!!! In memory of Melissa Ann Lentz. She lived and worked in Yelapa and made many friends. She will be greatly missed. We love you missy!!

Dear Editor,

I just read the Anne Humphreys letter to the editor in your March 2, 2003 issue.

It is sad to read about someone who has spent so much time in PV for so many years, now become so disillusioned about this wonderful city.

I understand that everyone's personal experiences are different and that everyone reacts differently to these situations, so let me tell you of our recent experiences in PV.

We just returned from three wonderful weeks in PV, and spent one week at the Marina, one in Conchas Chinas, and our third week at Los Tules.

Our experiences were just the opposite. We found the people to be more friendly, courteous and honest than even in the past. It seems that after Hurricane Kenna, they are even happier to see visitors. We saw the destruction in some areas and we were really impressed with what has already been rebuilt.

Most important, we had nothing but pleasant experiences with cab drivers, beach vendors, sales people and waiters... without exception! Maybe we were lucky, or maybe we appreciated being a guest in someone else's country.

Yes, some bus drivers may be a little faster than others, after all they cannot all get up to 100 mph, but all in all, they drive as they have always driven, and we still have not seen any accidents, though we are sure that they will happen.

The prices seem to be just a tad higher than last year in some places, and even a tad lower in others, but then here at home they continue to rise also.

We had a wonderful time and we are already looking forward to coming back again next year.
