Dear Editor, There
was no mention of this in the PVMirror.com web site. I was just wondering if the
newspaper reports (example below) were exaggerated. Thank you for all your
hard work, it is greatly appreciated. "Outbreak of
dengue fever hits Puerto Vallarta" Mexican officials are trying to contain
an outbreak of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne illness that causes high fevers,
rashes, and in severe cases, death. When Hurricane Kenna ripped through Puerto
Vallarta last month, it left behind $50 million and created the perfect breeding
ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes." Barbara
Goldsmith Dear Barbara, We
don't know which newspaper you are quoting, but it's too bad that Hurricane Kenna
did NOT leave us $50 Million in dollar bills laying on the streets
In
all seriousness, the hurricane was not the reason for the mosquitoes' arrival.
They have been traveling through Mexico in a northwesterly direction for the last
couple of months and the authorities had been advised that the insects would arrive
in these parts just about when they did. This past
week, the municipal authorities were spraying all over town, using both trucks
and airplanes, residences in the less privileged areas were visited personally
by inspectors, larvae deposits were eliminated and according to the latest information
(Nov. 14th), the entire area should be cleansed by the time you read this. Furthermore,
according to the medical authorities, "the immune systems of the people who
suffered from the fatal forms of the disease had already been weakened by previous
illnesses." To the best of our knowledge,
there have been no reports whatsoever of tourists coming down with the disease,
and it is not contagious. I also suggest you read
Jamie Coates' article in this issue, in the section entitled "You Should
Know". The Ed.
Anna, That
was an excellent review of Los Xitomates. Do they have a website? Also,
have the restaurants in Puerto Vallarta stopped taking credit cards as of 11/01,
or was it a bluff towards the banks? I live in Chicago
& love PV. I have been there 6 times & am coming in January for my birthday. I
have also been to Cancun this year, which was unbearable, due to high prices &
it was like being in Miami Beach. Also went to Cabo, which was okay, but nothing
like PV. I love the people & the experience. I was
so glad to see that everyone responded as necessary to re-build so quickly. I
read PV Mirror.com every week & as I am a crazy about food, I always read
your posts. Thank You, Arnie Finkel
Hi
everyone, I just read at www.pvrmirror.com
about the wonderful work the people did to clean up PVR after the hurricane. The
photos are extraordinary showing the during and after the storm. Lots of other
interesting facts in the weekly paper. Looking forward
to see you in PVR end of Jan./beginning of Feb. Regards,
A. D. in Montreal, Canada Editor's Note: This lady
sent her message to a long, long list of people. Isn't the world wide web great?
Dear
Editor, Re: Our nonchalant attitude After last weeks
paper came out a lot of my friends were kind of teasing me about my letter about
crossing the mains street here in the Hotel Zone. They felt it seemed pretty non-chalant
considering the damage we all suffered from Hurrican Kenna the week before and
especially since my own businesses were badly damaged. I
need to tell you that I wrote that letter to you on Thursday Oct. 24th the day
before the storm and ,YES, I was pretty Non-chalant at that time. I
think that all of us long time residents were pretty casual in our attitudes considering
the fact that a Class 5 hurricane was bearing down upon us. As
a matter of fact I spent a good part of the evening before explaining to customers
in my restaurant exactly why we would NOT be hit by this hurricane. I am sure
that most of you reading this right now said or heard the following comment: "
We have never had a hurricane in Vallarta"(well, there is a first time for
everything) " We are protected by the bay" (Not quite!) "
A hurricane could never get over the mountains to the south of us" (come
on guys, they are not the Himalayas) I was probably the
worse one out there saying these things and was actually laughing at some the
doom and gloom crowd that had a more realistic view of this thing. I
hope that we all (myself most of all) have learned something about respecting
the power of Mother Nature. I need to take some space
on your pages to show my thanks and gratitude to the people that showed up at
Los Tules and helped us shovel sand and clear debris from the condos and my restaurant
and store in the days following the storm. I could hardly
believe it Saturday morning when friends, clients, employees and even strangers
showed up with shovels and pick and started helping us with the clean up. All
of the calls and e-mails from concerned people, many of them clients from the
states wondering how all of my employees and myself had weathered the storm, really
helped all of us at Los Tules get past those first few days of utter shock and
disbelief. I want to send a message of thanks to each and every one of them here
and now. They will never know how much their supporting thoughts and concerns
meant to us all. I also want to thank each and every one
of my employees. The all have been working so hard to get things back up and running
These people are my waiters, cooks, maids, dishwashers etc... They have all been
out there everyday with shovels, brooms, mops, buckets, paintbrushes and paint
and I have not heard one of them say " This is not my job" or "I'm
out of here". I have learned to appreciate them so much in these last few
weeks. Unfortunately it sometimes takes a tragedy like this to make us realize
just how many gifts we really have and how lucky we are to live in a place were
the people really do care and neighbors all pitch in when someone needs help. I
love this town! Thank you again for giving me the forum to publicly show my
gratitude. Craig Abrahamson
Dear Editor, I
see the kids at "Once Upon A Time
" are making a comeback, which
is heartening
