Dear Editor:
Hi, I don't know if you will print
this but it's worth a shot: We just returned from Puerto
Vallarta on a Cruise ship - Royal Caribbean 8/22/02
and were harassed , had money demanded from us and detained
for 30 minutes by the police en route to El Eden - Hwy.
200 in a rental jeep.
We had two small children with us
and did nothing wrong, but in 30 minutes, the police
told us we could have our car impounded, license taken
until we boarded the ship, taken to State prison if
we didn't pay the ticket. My husband just insisted that
the police write the ticket but they kept demanding
'hundreds' - when my husband said loudly "Hundreds?"
in disbelief, the officer shushed him and eventually
sent us on our way saying we were "very lucky".
Later on we ran into a couple renting
a jeep through the same company. The story they told
was identical to us but they had to pay $50.00 and place
it into the lap of the officer instead of handing it
to him.
It goes without saying that it ruined
our trip to Puerto Vallarta.
I think tourism is greatly affected by these practices.
Thank you, K. Dennis
