MEXORC Regatta 2004

Mexorc (Mexican Ocean Racing Circuit), sanctioned by the Mexican Sailing Federation, is a series of 8 races in and along the Banderas Bay coastline. Over the years, it has turned into a great attraction for both racers and viewers.

'Lectronic Latitude wrote: "If you want to have a good time (sunshine, cervezas, lots of time for socializing), you still can't beat MEXORC, even in an off year."

This year's edition began last Saturday with a welcome cocktail. Sunday was scheduled for the

1 st and 2 nd Windward-Leeward Regatta, Monday is the day set for the 3 rd modified America's Cup Regatta and Tuesday for the 4 th Marieta Island Regatta. The competition continues on Thursday 18 th with the 5 th Panoramic Regatta and the 6 th Windward-Leeward Regatta with the 7 th scheduled for Friday 19 th . That night is devoted to the Cocktail Party and the Prize Dinner.

It was in the mid 70's that a group of enthusiastic sailors got together to found a new concept: the MEXORC (Mexican Ocean Racing Circuit) series. This gave Mexicans a chance to face American sailors in their own waters.

The one-week long competion was held every second year at first, but became an annual event with the advent of the sailing competions initiated by the San Diego Yacht Club and Marina del Rey in California. They would alternate between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta, only to settle on the Marina Vallarta facilities in the last few years. The Mexican boats leave from the Acapulco Yacht Club in such a way as to arrive here at the same time as the Americans.

Over the circuit's 29 years, many famous sailboats have participated in the event, for example: Roy Disney's PYWACKET, John Arens' TOMAHAWK, Jake Wods' SORCERY.

As the competition has achieved world recognition, each year sees a higher level of competitors not only from California, but from all over the U.S., Canada and Europe. Over 29 crafts have registered for this year's event.

The ROLEX watch company is the event's main sponsor, along with Cervecería Modelo, UK Sails, various local enterprises and restaurants, the State of Jalisco government and the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust. The race headquarters is at the Plaza Iguana (Flamingo Hotel).

Two Weeks to 2004 Terry Fox Run

Once again, as it has for the last few years, the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope will take place in Puerto Vallarta, on Sunday, March 28 th .

This year, Vallarta will be honored with the presence of Canada's Ambassador to Mexico, Gaëtan Lavertu who will preside at the opening of the marathon race run around the world to raise funds for cancer research.

The race will begin at the Splash water park in Nuevo Vallarta and end at the American School where the Fair of Hope will be celebrated until the afternoon, complete with music, gifts, food and a lot of fun.

Special 1-Day Clinic for Women Cruisers

COMING ABOUT T...Any Woman's Sailing School * Puerto Vallarta has announced a special one-day clinic for women cruisers for March 23rd at 10:00am to 5:00pm, Banderas Bay Yacht Club, Marina Vallarta.

The experienced team of women instructors at Coming AboutT is led by solo circumnavigator/author Pat Henry. With more than 300,000 ocean miles--much of it solo, the group will present personal-experience-based seminar topics dealing with a variety of offshore challenges and recommendations to make long passages safer, more pleasurable, and less stressful.

Recognizing that every short-handed boat faces the possibility of becoming a one-handed boat, the team will include techniques for solo anchoring, docking, rescue operations, reefing, and more.

They'll discuss preparations-knowledge, skills, resources, and attitude--to manage navigation, deal with engine problems, or handle radio contact. The program will include a section on sail theory and reefing (shortening sail)...when and why. A section on efficiency below decks, cooking in stormy conditions, and planning for a four-week passage will round out the day.

This Coming AboutT special program was built on trial and error experience to answer questions, develop confidence, and help create more enjoyable and relaxed passages for the participants as they head toward the Panama Canal, across the Pacific, or north to the Sea of Cortez for the summer.

Reservations are required and can be made in person at the Banderas Bay Yacht Club, at the head of 'H' dock in Marina Vallarta, Puerto Vallarta; by phone at 01-329-295-5613; by fax at 01-322-222-3411; and by Email at reservations@comingabout.com

The $30 fee, which includes a box lunch, can be paid at the club or online at http://comingabout.com (Go to the payment section on the register page of the site and click on course number 40006.)
