Restaurant Owners to Launch Promotion
Campaign
Restaurant owners intend to design a promotional campaign
on the national level in order to acquire repetitive
tourism instead of the traditional Easter holidays
and long weekends. They aim to advertise in the magazines
published by AeroMexico and some charter airlines,
this according to Fernando Arreola Amezcua, owner of
El Set Restaurant. The gentleman also added that joint
promotion is necessary, even though Nayarit may not
be an economic power, but Vallarta is, so if everyone
is pulling for his side, no one will win.
In the meantime, the AeroMéxico Leisure promotional
program will allow Puerto Vallarta to be present on
the international market during the remainder of the
year as it entails commercials, press conferences and
trade shows in various American cities. The district
manager of AeroMéxico in Vallarta explained
that the program beginning on April 18th will be developed
in conjunction with the hotel sector of Puerto Vallarta
and Bahía de Banderas, although it will deal
separately with each tourist destination in the presentation
programmed in each city, both nationally and internationally.
On the other hand, Vallarta
finds itself once again without international promotion
due to “some
problems” that came up with Marketur Inc., the
company hired by the Office of Conventions and Visitors
to handle the town’s publicity in 2004. Nevertheless,
the Director of the local OCV dismissed the possibility
that this situation would affect the destination, even
though Puerto Vallarta has already had a similar experience
last year with the Financiera de Medios company that
also left us without any national or international
promotion. (SRG – V.O.)
New Port Project Proposed
There is a new project for
the construction of a Convention center, promoted
by Sheraton hotel owner Gemma García
Arce, former basketball star Howard Kelsey and the
former General Director of Expo Guadalajara, José Antonio
Avila Fuentes.
This project foresees the construction of a convention
center on the land belonging to the local Port Authorities
(API), a building with a capacity for 6,000 people
in theater format and 4,000 in convention format with
worktables. It could also be adapted for multiple uses,
such as tennis courts, volleyball or concerts. The
area in question is 2.5 hectares in size.
For his part, the Jalisco Secretary
of Tourism said that although there are many projects
being considered for that particular piece of land,
none has been submitted for the building of a convention
center. And the API General Director stated that the
Port Authorities do not have sufficient space for this
project, and that besides, no plan has been submitted
nor has there been any meetings with businessmen.
Convention Center Doubts Persist
The official announcement
that 28.5 hectares of the area adjacent to El Salado
estuary will be used to build a “multiple use center” and a theme
park managed to gather together the Secretaries of
the State of Jalisco who, in company of Governor Francisco
Ramírez Acuña, fulfilled the promise
of making an announcement, though very different from
the false idea that the cornerstone of the Convention
Center would be laid down.
Ramírez declared that
within a maximum of 3 months, a call for tenders
will be issued for the construction, and by then
the investors or group to sponsor the project will
be made known according to the amount of the investment
required.
The Governor invited Puerto
Vallarta businessmen to join in the project, saying “you are the ones
who are aware of the advantages involved in growing
and investing in Puerto Vallarta.” He added that
the State government will not sell the land nor would
it be a co-investor, but rather that it will facilitate
the transactions.
According to the Secretary of Urban
Development, there is no secretiveness; there will
be a call for tenders executed in proper form. He added
that the department in his charge is responsible for
the preparation of the site, after which it would develop
the convention center project properly. This is a process
that will take time and require the efforts of the
town and the state government.
National Airlines Supported Vallarta
The national airlines supported Puerto Vallarta during
this past Easter season, operating flights at 100%
occupancy and accounting for approximately 20% of all
the Mexican tourists who chose this destination for
their holidays.
On the subject of the contribution of national airlines
in bringing tourism to Puerto Vallarta during all the
holiday seasons, the station manager for Azteca airlines
stated that all the airlines worked in unison for this
destination.
