A representation of Puerto
Vallarta headed by mayor Gustavo Gonzalez left for
Santa Barbara last Monday. Moments before departure,
the Mayor said that this traditional visit to Puerto
Vallarta´s Sister
City will be not only a means to renew the friendhip
and sisterhood between both cities, but also to hold
a series of talk with businessmen and investors to
the purpose of attracting more private investments
into our city, besides affirming a cultural exchange
to promote knowledge of the identity of both peoples.
 “As City authorities we are to hold a series of
meetings with local authorities, people from the cultures
as well, who will be invited by me to come to Puerto
Vallarta” said the Mayor.
He went on to say that the
presence of Municipal authorities means an endorsement
that generates trust of the Santa Barbara’s
government.
On the encounter with businessmen
from the California City, Gonzalez Villaseñor
said that this type of interaction is always desirable
to promote Puerto Vallarta as a destination where
people can invest safely.
The Puerto Vallarta delegation visiting Santa Barbara
during the week from August 3 to 8, was made up of
Councilwoman Maria Elena Sahagun Moreno and Yolanda
Cuevas Cortez,, as well as councilman for tourism Agustin
Alvarez. The president of DIF, Gloria Cordoba de Gonzalez,
and the Director of the Tourism Department, Jose Luis
Diaz Borioli, who join the Sister Cities Committee.

Se busca consolidar acuerdos
de intercambio cultural y atraer a la inversión

La ciudad de Santa Bárbara, California, recibió a
la comitiva Vallartense que encabezó el Presidente
municipal, Gustavo González Villaseñor,
quien momentos antes de viajar a esa ciudad hermana
de este destino turístico, declaro que la tradicional
visita serviría no solo para refrendar el hermanamiento
que existe entre ambas ciudades, sino también
para celebrar una serie de importantes entrevistas
con empresarios e inversionistas, con la finalidad
de atraer mas inversión privada a nuestra ciudad,
además de concretar un intercambio cultural
que promueva el conocimiento pleno de la identidad
de ambos pueblos.
“Nosotros como
Ayuntamiento tenemos una serie de reuniones con autoridades
de ese lugar, y con gente de la cultura también;
quienes serán invitadas
por un servidor para que acudan a Puerto Vallarta”.
Señaló el munícipe vallartense.
Pero fue mas allá y puntualizó que sin
lugar a duda la presidencia de las autoridades será un
aval que genere certidumbre para el gobierno de Santa
Bárbara, donde la premisa fundamental es la confianza.
Sobre el encuentro con empresarios
de esa ciudad costera en California, Estados Unidos;
Gonzáles Villaseñor
indicó que siempre se busca ese tipo de intervenciones
para proporcionar a Puerto Vallarta como un destino
en el que se puede invertir.
También se refirió a quienes conformaron
la delegación que por una semana, del 3 al 8
de Agosto estuvieron en Santa Bárbara: La regidora
Maria Elena Sahún Moreno y Yolanda Cuevas Cortés;
así como el regidor de la comisión de
turismo Agustín Álvarez Valdivia. Del
mismo modo el la presidenta del Sistema DIF, Gloria
Córdova de González. Asiste además
el Director de Turismo Municipal, José Luis
Díaz Borioli y el comité de Ciudades
Hermanas de Santa Bárbara- Puerto Vallarta.

In order to organize and coordinate
actions pertaining sea turtle protection in the North
Coast municipalities, Profepa´s (Environmental
Protection Attorney) Jalisco Delegation started a
series of talks this week with authorities and environmentalist
to create participating vigilance committees.
 Also, training courses have been given to different
police and military corporations, to the purpose
of fighting environmental crime, among others, clandestine
logging and illegal wood trafficking.
In an interview after a meeting
with members of the Sea Turtle Preservation Council,
Martha Ruth Del Toro Gaytan, Profeta´s State
Delegate told the media that the main purpose of
these meetings is to start working at organizing
sea and land operations to be implemented along the
coastal zone, where inspection points will be established
along the roads and direct inspection in probable
locations where sea turtle products and byproducts
are likely to be sold.
She said that the idea is to establish one or more
vigilance committees to work specifically on this aspect,
regardless of their world. Besides the sea turtle issue,
Mrs. Del Toro said that another important concern,
is the immoderate logging and the illegal trafficking
of wood, therefore police corps in neighboring municipalities
have been instructed on a manual of inspection of forestall
products.
The were explained the content of a bill of lading
and how to detect counterfeit documents, the correct
manner an authority must aboard these vehicles and
in general, the measures to be taken upon facing alleged
crimes of this type.
Del Toro Gaytan said that
the participation of environmental organizations,
also referred to as ONG’s (Non
Government Organizations, Spanish initials) is fundamental,
since at fighting clandestine activity and illegal
trafficking of animal species, such as sea turtle, “it
would be impossible for us with just our resources
to have such an effective and extensive coverage”
She remarked that in these actions where promotion,
inspection and vigilance are combined, in which at
least 12 different organizations participate, important
steps are being taken in this regard.

Con el propósito de organizar y coordinar acciones
en torno a la protección de la tortuga marina
en los municipios de la zona costera norte, la delegación
Jalisco de la Procuraduría Federal de Protección
al Ambiente –PROFEPA-, inicio esta semana con
una serie de platicas y reuniones entre autoridades
y grupos ambientales para la conformación de
comités de vigilancia participativa.
Además, se impartieron cursos de capacitación
y orientación entre las diferentes corporaciones
policíacas y Ejército, con la finalidad
atacar de manera frontal los delitos ambientales, entre
otros, la tala clandestina de árboles y el tráfico
ilegal de madreas preciosas.
Entrevistada
al respecto, luego de una reunión
con integrantes del Consejo de Conservación
de la Tortuga Marina, Martha Ruth Del Toro Gaytán,
delegada de la PROFEPA en Jalisco, informó que
el propósito fundamental de estas reuniones,
es trabajar desde ahora en la organización de
los operativos que por tierra y mar se habrán
de implementar a lo largo de la zona costera, donde
se establecerán puntos de revisión carreteros
e inspección directa en centros de probable
distribución de productos y subproductos de
tortuga marina.
Dijo que la idea de establecer
uno o más comités
de vigilancia participativa que trabaje en forma especifica
sobre este aspecto, independientemente de que participen
en las tareas y acciones que realizan otros comités
orientados a la preservación de los recursos
naturales de la región. En cuanto a las acciones
de protección de la tortuga, advirtió que
durante todo el ciclo de arribazón del quelonio,
estarán muy activos y presentes en toda la región
costa norte y sur, esperando que la término
de esta temporada, se haya inhibido en forma casi completa,
los fenómenos de depresión de esta especie,
tan importante no solo para México sino para
el mundo entero.
Además del fenómeno de la tortuga, dijo
que en el ámbito forestal otra de las preocupaciones
es la tala inmoderada y el tráfico ilegal de
maderas preciosas, por lo que se dio una orientación
a las distintas corporaciones policíacas de
los municipios aledaños, PFP, Policía
Rural y Ejercito Mexicano, en base a un anual de inspección
del transporte de productos forestales.
Se les explicó el contenido de las guías
y como detectar documentos falsos; la forma correcta
en que una autoridad debe abordar estos vehículos,
y en general, de las medidas a tomar ante presuntos
delitos de este tipo. Del Toro Gaytán refirió que
la participación de los grupos ambientalistas,
denominados también, ONG’s (Organizaciones
No Gubernamentales) es fundamental, ya que en el combate
a la clandestinidad y el tráfico ilegal de especies,
como la tortuga marina, “no sería posible
que nosotros solamente con nuestros recursos pudiéramos
hacer una cobertura efectiva”.
Indico que en estas acciones
en las que se combina el fomento, inspección y vigilancia, en las
que coadyuvan al menos 12 organizaciones, se están
dando pasos importantes en estos dos aspectos.

 At the ceremony where Velas Vallarta Hotela and Café Des
Artiste Restaurant were awarded the H Certification
for their outstanding standards of hygienic handling
of food, mayor Gustavo Gonzalez said that this type
of recognition brings Puerto Vallarta up to a top spot
as a destination that provides its visitors with a
high level of quality services.
He also said that this encourages him to continue
to promote the destination with growing enthusiasm,
just as he has done in every major event he has participated
and he will continue to do in his upcoming tours to
Santa Barbara , Chicago and in protocol visits with
governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In fact, he mentioned that as first authority of the
municipality, he has been promoting upcoming events
such as the International Tequila Festival in December,
The Film Festival of the Americas in }November, the
Gourmet Festival, also to be held in November, and
the song Festival, featuring Alejandro Fernandez, among
other.
He considered that the unity of all the economic sectors
of Puerto Vallarta is most important, for the sake
of strengthening tourism, specially when the quality
of services provided by the gastronomic sector and
the hotels is recognized.
“we hold a top position as to gastronomy and
hotel services” he commented upon commending
the management and personnel of Velas Vallarta Hotel
and Café des Artistes Restaurant.
He added that the core of
this industry and the government he heads is tourism,
and that all lines of action aim strengthening tourist
infrastructure, but a culture and awareness is required
for as to “go towards
the objective of having more tourism in Puerto Vallarta”.
 He established an analogy between his job as Mayor
and that of a chef or a waiter, by considering that
the same effort and dedication to provide quality
services to visitors must be put in. Presiding the
ceremony was also Jalisco´s Tourist Secretary,
Horacio Gonzalez Pardo, who also dubbed the awards “well
deserved”. He said that Puerto Vallarta is
a unique place for its natural and cultural wealth,
and offers the visitor a wide variety of choice to
their enjoyment, along with a tourist vocation firmly
founded in the hospitality of its service providers.
He said that one of the priorities established by
the National Tourist Program is to have satisfied
tourist who find in their stay, besides fun, an amiable,
safe environment, such as that of Vallarta. He also
said that getting the H certification entails a new
challenge to continue improving on a day-to-day basis,
with the responsibility to represent the sector positively.
The H certification granted
by the Tourist and Health Ministries, to those business
or corporations that not only offer quality services
but meet high standards of hygienic handling of food,
as explained by doctor Hector Hugo Cortés, representative of the Health
Secretariat’8 Sanitary Jurisdiction. Award certificates
were accepted by Carolina Barrera, General Director
of Café des Artistes, and Luis Angarita, General
Manager of Velas Vallarta. In attendance at the ceremony
were also representatives of the different sectors
among them Luis Alberto Topete, president of the Chamber
of Commerce; Ludwig Estrada, representative of Setujal
in Puerto Vallarta, among others.

Reconocimiento Distintivo “H”

El primer edil inauguró también los
trabajos del XIII congreso de la sociedad de Cirugía
Neurológica de Occidente.
Al participar en la entrega
de los distintivos “H” al
que se hicieron merecedores las empresas Café Des
Artistes y Hotel Velas Vallarta, como reconocimiento
a la calidad de sus servicios, el presidente municipal
Gustavo González Villaseñor, destacó que
este tipo de reconocimientos hacen de Puerto Vallarta
el principal destino del país que brinda a sus
visitantes servicios y atención de primer nivel.
Dijo además que ello también lo alienta
a seguir promoviendo con mayor entusiasmo las bondades
de este puerto, como lo ha ido haciendo con otros foros
en los que ha participado dentro y fuera del país,
como lo hará en el próximo viaje a Santa
Bárbara, posteriormente en Chicago, y el intercambio
de visitas protocolarias con el gobernador de California
Arnold Schwarzenegger.
De
hecho mencionó que como primera autoridad
del municipio, ha venido promoviendo eventos que se
tienen programados para los últimos meses del
año, entre estos el Festival Internacional del
Tequila, en diciembre; Festival del Cine de las Américas,
en noviembre; el Festival Internacional Gourmet, también
en noviembre; el Festival de las Artes; el Festival
de la Trova, con la presencia de Alejandro Fernández
en el malecón; entre otros.
Considero importante la unidad
de todos los sectores productivos de Puerto Vallarta,
en aras de fortalecer el aspecto turístico, sobre todo cuando se reconoce
la calidad de todos los servicios que se brinda al
turismo en la industria de la hotelería y la
gastronomía.
“Ocupamos ya un primerísimo lugar a nivel
nacional en gastronomía, de servicio en la hotelería”,
comento al felicitar a directivos y personal del Hotel
Velas Vallarta, así como el Café Des
Artistes.
Agrego que el eje rector de
esta industria y del gobierno que encabeza, es el
turismo, por lo que las líneas
de acción van encaminadas al fortalecimiento
de la infraestructura turística, pero se requiere
conciencia y cultura en el aspecto turístico
para que en ese sentido “vayamos hacia el objetivo
fundamental de tener mas turismo en Puerto Vallarta”.
Comparo la labor de un presidente
municipal con la de un cocinero o mesero, al considerar
que se debe realizar el mismo esfuerzo y empeño
por brindar servicios de calidad a los visitantes.
La entrega de estos distintivos
contó con la
presencia del Secretario de Turismo de Jalisco, Horacio
González Pardo, quien al igual calificó de
merecidos los reconocimientos que en esta ocasión
se otorgaron a las empresas referidas.
Dijo que Puerto Vallarta es
un lugar único
por su riqueza natural y cultural, que ofrece al visitante
una gran variedad de opciones y entretenimiento, como
carta de presentación, cuya vocación
turística ha sido fincada significativamente
en la hospitalidad de sus prestadores de servicios.
Indicó que una de las prioridades establecidas
en el programa nacional de turismo, es lograr turistas
satisfechos que encuentren en su estancia, además
de diversión, un entorno amigable y seguro,
como es el caso de Puerto Vallarta.
Manifestó que el obtener el Distintivo “H” por
parte de las empresas mencionadas, significa un nuevo
reto para seguir superándose día a día,
con la responsabilidad de proyectar positivamente al
sector.
El
distintivo “H” es otorgado por la Secretaria
de Turismo y la Secretaria de Salud, a aquellas empresas
o negocios que ofrecen no solo calidad en sus servicios,
sino también un reconocimiento a quienes cumplan
con las mas altas normas de calidad en el manejo higiénico
de los alimentos, como lo explicó el Doctor
Héctor Hugo Cortés, representante de
la Jurisdicción Sanitaria Numero 8 de la Secretaria
de Salud.
Los reconocimientos fueron
recibidos por Carolina Barrera, directora General
del Café Des Artistes,
y Luis Angarita, gerente general del Hotel Velas Vallarta,
en presencia de representantes de los diferentes sectores
locales, entre estos, el presidente de la Cámara
de Comercio, Luis Alberto Topete; José Ludwing
Estrada, representante de la SETUJAL en Puerto Vallarta,
entre otros.

Miguel Koenig, the
world record holder for capturing marlin, has confirm
his participation in the 49th International
Puerto Vallarta Sailfish and Marlin Tournament.

At the end of September of last year, the fishing
club of Puerto Vallarta received a letter addressed
to its member, where Miguel Koenig, who had lived in
Puerto Vallarta from 1989 to 1996, shared his great
achievement he accomplished in the Hawaiian Marlin
Tournament in July 2003.
 In his letter, Miguel informed his friends from Vallarta
that during the tournament in Hawaii he had the privilege
of capturing the largest blue marlin ever caught in
any world tournament! In the same letter he included
a photo that we will publish with the authorization
of the Fishing club.
I had the honor of reading this letter and I could
distinguish, that irrespective of his obtained world
record, the most admirable thing is that Miguel mentions
in a sincere and passionate way which is full of gratitude,
that the described catch would not have been possible
without the knowledge and experience he gained through
the master fishermen, teaching him in Puerto Vallarta.
In a touching manner Miguel narrates one of his anecdotes
that occurred during the time he lived in Puerto Vallarta.
One day while fishing in the bay of banderas, after
3 hours of struggling, Miguel, accompanied by his friend
Moray Applegate, lost a marlin as big as the one he
caught in Hawaii and which are plentiful in our waters.
An unforgettably sad day, says Miguel.
In his letter he also mentions how he always received
the support of his friends from Vallarta: Moray Applegate,
Don Nacho Zaragoza, instructor Childres, Cap. Juan
Moll, Chito, Enrique Arreola, Ivan and el Chicano amongst
many others. In his words one may perceive the genuine
appreciation and affection for a land, a sea, a town
and its people offering love and instruction to him
during his stay. Puerto Vallarta continues alive for
him like a burning flame. For Miguel the catch he secured
in Hawaii, officially recognized as the biggest catch
of a marlin ever achieved in a world tournament, was
obtained in honor of friendship and of the fishermen
and people of Vallarta. Moreover he dedicated it to
the Fishing club of Puerto Vallarta and its members.
During his residence in our town Miguel was an active
member of the Fishing Club of Puerto Vallarta, and
at present even though he is not active anymore due
to his return to the United States, he continues being
an honorary member.
 Again congratulations to Miguel for his catch, and
to the Fishing Club of Puerto Vallarta and its members
for the dedication. And of course congratulations to
Puerto Vallarta for entering and staying in the mind
and heart of a man who, the moment he generated it,
honored our town his way with his great achievement.

and Marlin Tournament which will take place from the
17 th to the 20 th of November of this year. During
the tournament the Fishing Club of Puerto Vallarta
will grant him a special recognition for his world
record.

Miguel
Koenig, poseedor del récord mundial
de captura de marlín confirma su participación
en el 49 Torneo Internacional Puerto Vallarta de Pesca
de Pez Vela y Marlín.

El año pasado a finales del mes de septiembre,
el Club de Pesca de Puerto Vallarta A. C. recibió una
carta dirigida a sus miembros, donde Miguel Koenig
quien vivió en Puerto Vallarta de 1989 a 1996,
les compartía su gran hazaña lograda
en el Hawaii Marlin Tournament de Julio del 2003.
En su carta, Miguel hacía del conocimiento
a sus amigos vallartenses, que durante el torneo en
Hawaii tuvo el privilegio de capturar al marlín
azul más grande que jamás se haya capturado
durante un torneo en el mundo! En su misiva incluía
una fotografía que publicamos con la autorización
del Club de Pesca.
Tuve el honor de leer esa
carta y pude distinguir que independientemente del
record mundial obtenido, lo más admirable es que Miguel, de una forma
sincera, apasionada y llena de agradecimiento, hacía
mención que dicha captura no le hubiera sido
posible sin los conocimientos y la experiencia adquirida
a través de sus maestros pescadores en Puerto
Vallarta.
Conmovedoramente Miguel narra
una de sus anécdotas
ocurrida durante el tiempo en que vivió en Puerto
Vallarta. En compañía de su amigo Moray
Aplegate, en un día de pesca en la Bahía
de Banderas después de tres horas de pelea,
perdió un marlín tan grande como el capturo
en Hawaii y que abundan en nuestras aguas. Un día
inolvidablemente triste, dice Miguel.
En su carta también menciona como siempre recibió el
apoyo de sus amigos vallarentenses; Moray Applegate,
Don Nacho Zaragoza, el maestro Childres, el Cap. Juan
Moll, Chito, Enrique Arreola, Ivan y el Chicano, entre
muchos otros. En sus palabras se puede percibir el
verdadero aprecio y cariño por una tierra, un
mar, un pueblo y su gente, que durante su estadía
le brindaron amor y enseñanza. Para el Puerto
Vallarta sigue encendida como una flama ardiente. La
captura en Hawai, oficialmente reconocida como la más
grande de marlín lograda durante algún
torneo en el mundo, fue para Miguel lograda en honor
a la amistad, a los pescadores y a la gente de Puerto
Vallarta, además se la dedico al Club de Pesca
de Puerto Vallarta A. C., y a sus miembros. Durante
su residencia en nuestra ciudad Miguel fue miembro
activo del Club de Pesca de Puerto Vallarta, A.C.,
y actualmente, aunque no activo por razón de
su regreso a Estados Unidos, sigue siendo miembro honorario.
Nuevamente felicidades a Miguel
por su captura, así como
al Club de Pesca de Puerto Vallarta y a sus miembros
por la dedicatoria. Y por supuesto felicidades a Puerto
Vallarta por entrar y mantenerse en la mente y el corazón
de un hombre que a su manera, en el momento que el
se generó, con su hazaña la honró.
Miguel ha confirmado su participación en el
49 Torneo de Internacional Puerto Vallarta de Pesca
de Pez Vela y Marlín a celebrarse del 17 al
20 de Noviembre de este año. Durante el torneo
el Club de Pesca de Puerto Vallarta A. C., le otorgará un
reconocimiento especial por su récord mundial.
