Promotion of Private Investments and Tourism to Continue Provided by Ambito
A group of students majoring in International Commerce in the University of Arizona, headed by Professor Robert E. Tindall paid a visit to Mayor Gustavo Gonzalez, while participating in a three-day tour of Puerto Vallarta, aiming to get acquainted with the world of business and investments in Mexico and Latin America, as well as the relations with United States.
In a conversation that went on for over an hour, the mayor, professor and students exchanged points of view and commented on subjects regarding commerce, business, corporations, tourism, and above all, the role of municipal government in promoting public and private investments in the municipality.
Upon answering the question posed by a student, Mayor Gonzalez said investment in Puerto Vallarta is estimated at 300 million dollars, and remarked on the intense promotional work he has carried out in different market niches of United Sates in order to bring more tourists and investments to the destination.
He mentioned that last year Puerto Vallarta received a record number of visitors, by attracting 3.5 million tourists, and added that along with business and tourist sectors, the City is working to position Puerto Vallarta as the number one destination in Mexico.
"Puerto Vallarta's success is due to a unique beach scenario, with a very Mexican flavor where besides beaches, sun and sea, there are mountains, tropical jungle, rivers and creeks with an abundance of flora and fauna all around us."
He also said that Puerto Vallarta is ranked among the safest and friendliest cities of Mexico, and all security forces maintain a good coordination to provide tranquility to both residents and visitors.
He added that with the support of both federal and state governments 200 million pesos a year are earmarked for public works, urban infrastructure and utilities, which has enabled an almost 100 % coverage as to water, sewer and power.
At the end of the conversation, the mayor expressed his interest in visiting the cities of Tucson and Phoenix, probably as soon as early June, and promised to visit the University of Arizona to establish cultural exchange and promote foreign investment and tourism in Puerto Vallarta as he has done in his previous trips.

Proposal to Build a Public Market Provided by Ambito
It would be the solution to a problem that affects Puerto Vallarta: Armando Sojo Garza.
To the purpose of contributing to the strengthening of the local economy Jalisco Delegation of the Economy Ministry, is seeking to bring about a project to adapt a space with the characteristics of a public market, in order to regulate and formalize some of the irregular commerce in town.
A project of this kind has the advantage to enable the relocation of informal vendors and merchants, thus making them part of the formal economy, while solving one of the problems that affect Puerto Vallarta as a tourist destination.
Armando Sojo Garza Aldape, Delegate of the Economy Ministry for Jalisco, met with Mayor Gustavo Gonzalez Villaseñor and a group of businessmen last Tuesday, and presented the proposal to build a market, which requires in the first place, that the City should designate a land plot where the market would be built.
He said that the Economy Ministry has two million pesos earmarked for this project; the state government would participate with an equal sum, and the Municipality of Puerto Vallarta an equal amount, which can be cash or in this case a land plot, besides the investment private businessmen would be willing to make. He indicated that there is the proposal from the mayor to place the market on the River Cuale Island, but this of course would depend on the feasibility of the location and once authorized by the City Hall, ground would be broken within one month.
"The intent is to adapt a space where two types of merchants can be located: the established merchant s who would like to expand to an additional locale and the informal merchants who would like to turn formal."
He added that this would contribute to the gradual relocation of all the informal commerce that affects the city, which involves giving these people, the opportunity and the tools to incorporate into the formal sector of the economic activity.
He reiterated that if approved by the City Hall, construction could begin this year and while planning to continue building such spaces that would end the problem of informal ambulatory commerce in the city.
He said there is a great disposition on the part of the government headed by Gustavo Gonzalez Villaseñor and the merchants or businessmen can organize to participate in the project through the Economy Promotion Office directed by Eduardo Garcia Joya.

Construction on Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue Underway Provided by Ambito
Last Monday, construction on the side lanes of the Francisco Medina Ascencio Avenue kicked off, on the stretch between the maritime terminal and the Krystal Hotel.
Works are estimated at 4 million pesos. Remberto Quintero Gutierrez, head of Municipal Public Works Department, told a press conference that the work underway is hydraulic pavement on the side lanes of the avenue, funded by the municipality, and expected to be completed by September this year. The contract for this work was awarded by the municipality to the company Cinco Contemporanea, S.A.
Quintero Gutierrez said that since this is a work funded by the municipality, the participation of the adjacent hotels is sought, with any contribution to make the project more viable and so that the municipality won't be the only one to carry with the cost of it.
Quintero Gutierrez also informed that he met last week with state Secretary of Urban Development to get an update as to the situation of the solicitation for the bridges on El Salado estuary and Pitillal River, and assured that the solicitation will be issued soon, so the works can commence as soon as possible.
He said that the balance resulting from these works will be earmarked to the construction of the bridge to connect Mexico Avenue (Slaughterhouse- Mojoneras) and the avenue across Fluvial Vallarta to Plaza Caracol, since these are other strategic projects planned by this municipal administration.
The functionary added that it is important that the solicitation for the bridges be issued, every time that the permits to be processed before the federal authorities are already in progress and it is only left to sign the agreement between the city and the Urban Development Secretariat (Sedeur) which will be done in an extraordinary session of the City Council.
On other matters, Remberto Quintero also commented that he had been at the Water and Sanitation State Commission to find out about the status of the construction of three residual water treatment plants in Las Palmas, which as he found out show between 50 and 70% progress.
In this regard, he pointed out that these works are carried out thanks to funding from the Regional Development Fund, and that it is sought, should any surplus result from them, to be earmarked for the construction of the collectors of all three plants, according to their importance.
In the case of the sewer works at Boca de Tomatlán, he said there is a 20% advance in the works, without taking in consideration the construction of the water treatment plant, which is 90% completed. He estimated a four month completion time for the sewer.
He said Seapal Vallarta is getting involved, as the agency responsible for the service to register users in the area, and to seek for funds to maintain the sewer.
