Intense Journey for Security Bodies in the Municipality
Provided By Ambito

During last weekend’s storm, Municipal Emergency Preparedness, Fire Department and the rest of the agencies in charge of safeguarding the physical integrity of the population reported no loss of human life.

According to Commander Adan Castellanos Rubio, Head of Municipal Emergency Preparedness, there were only 15 people reported as evacuated from their homes in the town of Ixtapa, due to the flooding of four houses within a multifamily complex, where water level rose 1.6 meters and caused a wall to collapse.

Families have been evacuated prior to the events, and taken to the Ixtapa Ejido Hall, which was turned into temporary shelter.

All work groups were put in action within the framework of the Municipal Preparedness Plan, besides having the support of the Health Secretariat, which offered to provide medical assistance to evacuees.

Castellanos Rubio said that as part of the agreements established at the last meeting of the Preparedness Council, held on June 23, it was resolved to habilitate 30 temporary shelters, which can be used at any time since they are fully equipped.

Personnel form Public Works and Public Utilities participated in assessing the damage sustained by houses in order to determine whether they are safe for families to return.

Other emergencies registered during the storm were four cars flooded in avenues Francisco Villa and Medina Ascencio, besides fallen power cables in Colonia Versalles and Las Juntas. Minor flooding was registered at Colonia Arboledas, as well as minor land slides on the road stretch from Conchas Chinas Bridge to Barranca Honda Bridge, which caused brief interruptions to traffic.

Puerto Vallarta Launches International Tourist Promotion Campaign
Provided By Ambito

Puerto Vallarta’s Tourism Board has launched a promotional campaign abroad in an effort to inform the international public about the wide variety of attractions this destination has to offer.

This year’s budget for the Board is 31 million pesos, out of which seven percent will go to operation costs and the rest will be used to fund promotional activities.

To Miguel González González, General Director of the Tourism Board, the organization’s highest priority is to promote the pueblito image Puerto Vallarta enjoys. This warm image, full of traditions and culture is a very attractive one to the European market, which this destination has not captured yet.

According to figures released by the Tourism board, out of 3.7 million tourists who visited Puerto Vallarta in 2005, 52% are Mexican and 48% foreigners. Eighty-two percent of the international visitors came from United States.
IN 2006, Puerto Vallarta expects to increase the number of visitors at 5%, as well as the economic inflow, which last year reached 9.5 billion pesos.

Most of the tourists coming to the Port are over 40 years old, however, local authorities and tourist and hotel operators, are working to take advantage of the natural resources and attract a more varied tourism.

The campaign, titled “The Day of…” emphasizes the most attractive activities for a younger tourist, such as water ski, surfing, snorkeling, canopy tours, and even a little more eccentric activities like a donkey polo match.

The Tourism Board also aims at bringing the traditional side of the Port into the limelight by promoting its fine gastronomy and colonial architecture.
Among the attractions offered by the program, there is an excursion to San Sebastian, a colonial town, famous for its silver mines and natural attractions.
Likewise there is a tour into the Huichol territory, a trip to the Sierra Madre Mountains for a close look at the traditions, handicrafts and way of life of this ethnic group.

The golf segment is another market of interest for this tourist destination. Early in November the fifth Vallarta Golf Coup will take place, a growing event attracting more participants every year.

Whale watching and sea turtle releasing are particularly exciting to children, and make Puerto Vallarta an ideal tourist destination fro the whole family.

Construction of Parking Lot on Lazaro Cardenas Square Ruled
Provided By Ambito

Promotora de la Propiedad Raiz de Jalisco, S.A. de C.V. presented the project that includes the proposals of neighbors and ecologists to execute the work

Seeking to provide the municipality with the necessary spaces to avoid traffic jams downtown, thus offering tourists and residents more comfort when driving on these streets, and above all, consolidating this destination as the only one to bring together the attractions of a Mexican village and the progress of a city, last Wednesday the Parking Lot Tender Commission ruled to grant the tender to execute and operate the project on Lazaro Cardenas Square to the company “Promotora de la Propiedad Raiz de Jalisco, S.A. de C.V.”

City Attorney Miguel Angel Yerena Ruiz made it clear that this ruling came after analysis of the proposal made by the company, besides being considered within the assessment of the different attitudes expressed around the project, that is, the proposals of both neighbors and ecologist groups were studied in order to include their petitions as far as possible within the project.

In his statement, the Attorney said that Promotora de la Propiedad Raiz de Jalisco, S.A. de C.V.” was the only company interested in entering the tender. Within the requirements to be considered within the executive project are to respect a 100-meter area for a Botanical Garden, to keep the existing parotas within the project perimeter.
Yerena Ruiz said that a lease contract is to be drawn up. He also said that today, only a draft of the resolve was produced, and once the resolve is signed by the members of the commission, the lease contract will be drawn up and then it will be proceeded to handing over the property to the company’s legal representative.

The attorney said that construction of commercial spaces is not authorized in any of the parks, and added that “there will be omissions that will have to be corrected but to date no executive project including construction of commercial spaces has been authorized. This time there are two spaces foreseen, one for public security and another for administration offices.”

The parking lot will have 178 spaces, 8 of them reserved to disabled persons. Like the other parking lots, the concession will last 25 years, at 5% of the gross income. The proposed fare is 15 pesos per hour.

It is to recognize that the tender procedures have improved, since it has been sought to avoid past mistakes, thus seeking the citizens’ agreement.

Yerena Ruiz said that this is how the City affirms its support to the municipality and its constant development, in spite of the debate generated by the construction of this type of spaces, it must be taken in consideration that Puerto Vallarta is a city that has lacked urban planning, which is primordial at this moment.

He continued to say “it is totally true that we must evolve to make the city attractive to residents and visitors. Somebody has had to make the decisions, which must have been faced long ago. This time the current administration has been charged with them and all decisions made have been aimed at seeking the city’s progress.”

Texas Rotary Club donation and contribution from the City Hall to benefit elementary school in Colonia La Floresta

Thanks to the altruistic labor of the International Rotary Club, the elementary school Maria Elena Aguila Gonzalez in Colonia La Floresta will be benefited by the tiling of six classrooms. The City of Puerto Vallarta will contribute half the necessary funds.

Mayor Gustavo Gonzalez Villaseñor met with Jim Hunter, representative of the Dallas, Texas Rotary Club, and thanked him for the support the club has provided to the construction of the school ever since 1998.

In attendance at the meeting were also Councilman Agustin Alvarez Valdivia, a member of the Puerto Vallarta Rotary Club; the club’s President Beatriz Miramontes, and Councilwoman Lidia Saracco Torres, head of the City’s Education Department.

The mayor said that the government he chairs will gladly contribute to the realization of this important work, that will come to improve the conditions of the educational center and will result in better education for the new generations.

Alvarez Valdivia, in turn, said that thanks to the efforts of the Puerto Vallarta and Dallas, Texas Rotary Clubs and the local authorities, for over 8 years it has been made possible to provide the Maria Elena Aguila Gonzalez Elementary School with the necessary infrastructure, because when it began operations, the school’s classrooms had cardboard walls.

This time around, with the contribution of the Texan Rotary Club and the City Hall, the tiling the classrooms will be completed before the next session commences.
