Record Number of Baby Turtles Released at the Westin Resort's Beach
Provided By Ambito

The Sea Turtle Protection Program, which began in 1993 in Puerto Vallarta, has produced increasing results everyyear, and the Westin Resort proudly announced the release of 929 baby turtles, thus breaking the previous record of 750 turtles released in a single event.

Children from several schools and hotel guests were invited to partake in this emotional event. These actions are an attraction for several reasons, because besides helping an endangered species recover, they involve environmental education for children and adults alike; an informative briefing precedes the actual liberation of turtles, regarding the importance of nature preservation and respect, and it is an unforgettable experience for all.

From June to October, sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) arrive in the beaches to lay their eggs. Landings are reported to trained personnel and a patrol immediately picks up the eggs and carries them to a protected nesting ground. Several hotels and condominiums participate, as well as the University of Guadalajara and local fishermen.

Results have increased steadily since the beginning of the program. The Westin Resort has released over 46,000 baby turtles.

Nature has been generous to this region. Westin Resort and Spa joins the people of Vallarta and works to protect and maintain the beauty and magic of this destination.
