Successful Open Heart Surgery at Hospital San Javier
Provided By Ambito

In a press conference held in the meeting room at Hospital San Javier Marina, a group of doctors informed the media about a successful open heart surgery performed on Dominick Clemente, 59. Clemente was traveling with his wife Susan aboard a cruise ship when he began to experience chest pain, and was referred by the doctor aboard the ship to the San Javier Hospital, through its medical cruise ship coordinator, Dr. Agustin Fernandez Souza.

Dominick considered himself a healthy man, a non smoker, non drinker who exercises regularly; whoever, studies practiced on him at the hospital proved one of the main arteries to be blocked in three different spots, which called for immediate surgery. The team of medical specialists who responded to the emergency call was made of Cardiologist Leslie Swindle, Cardiologist Alejandro Valadez and Internist, Intensive Therapist Alejandro Ríos; who immediately took charge of the situation and provided the patient with the required assistance.

After evaluating the state of Mr. Clemente, it was decided that the best option was to operate, and immediately proceeded to make the necessary arrangements. One of the top cardio-surgeons in the country was flown in from Guadalajara along with a specialized anesthesiologist. Within twenty four hours from been admitted in the hospital, the patient had been successfully operated and taken to the intensive care section. He was expected to recover and be able to fly back home, safely and comfortably, within one week.

The successful operation performed by the doctors at San Javier Hospital was possible thanks to the latest technology available inside the hospital, which enables them to evaluate the situation of a patient within a few hours.

At the press conference was also Mrs. Clemente, who commented on the prompt care provided by the hospital, and said she was grateful that all the necessary equipment was right here at the hospital, since in small cities in America, patients are often forced to travel two or three hours to a nearby city where facilities are available. She rated San Javier’s care “superior”. “And when I say superior…” she emphasized. She has been in the medical field for years.

Reporters were allowed to see Mr. Clemente in his room, with his previous approval. He said he felt good, and remarked on the fact that he was lucid when he left the operating room.

Dr. Valadez said at the press conference that the type of surgery carried out was known as "beating heart surgery," a phrase used to describe cardiac surgery done without bypass pump mechanism. In these operations, the heart is beating during surgery. This approach results in fewer post-operative complications and better overall results.

Toys for Tots Set Out to Raise 10,000 Smiles
Provided By Ambito

Toys for Tots’ Annual Gala Dinner Dance took place at the CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa last Sunday, December 10. It was a wonderful fun evening for golfers and Navy League friends in support of a very noble cause, bringing a smile to the faces of 10,000 children in communities of Puerto Vallarta and the neighbor municipality of Bahia de Banderas. On Three Kings Day, a motorcade will depart from the Marriott to deliver 10,000 toys to needy children.

Navy League’s Jerry Lafferty, who played master of ceremonies at the dinner dance, was very pleased toannounce that this year the Toys for Tots campaign had far surpassed the expectations of organizers and volunteers, by reaching the $700,000-peso mark, as compared to $400,000 last year. Funds raised this year not only make it possible for the charitable organization to give away 10,000 toys to an equal number of children in surrounding villages, but also to build two new playgrounds in depressed areas, to provide children with the facilities to develop fun physical activities. One location is being selected in the Puerto Vallarta municipality with the help of the Social Development Department, and the other location will be determined in Bahia de Banderas.

Jerry reminisced of the humble beginnings of the charity in Puerto Vallarta eight years ago, when it raised a little money to buy 700 toys. Likewise, he recognized the people who have been the driving forces behind this great effort, such as Dennis Whitelaw and Lita Aguirre, General Manager of Marriott CasaMagna; and American Consular Agent Kelly Trainor.

Today, sponsors supporting Toys for Tots include the Marriott CasaMagna Resort, the Vista Vallarta Golf Club, Coldwell Banker/La Costa Realty, Continental Airlines, Scotiabank and TaylorMade-Adidas; as well as more than 100 local small businesses. The support received from sponsors and the dedicated work of a large body of volunteers enable the charity to devote every peso raised to its purpose: putting a smile on the faces of children.

The award ceremony for the Toys for Tots Golf Tournament followed a delicious dinner that was enjoyed by all. The golf tournament was held on Saturday, December 9, at the Vista Golf Club’s Weiskopf course and the foursome led by Joe Johnston won it. Prizes were also awarded in various other categories, including longest drive and closest to the pin, which incidentally, was won by Dennis Whitelaw.

A couple of videos were shown during the evening, with the tournament’s highlights and the history of Toys for Tots in Puerto Vallarta.

Door prizes were also given away, and a silent auction of selected items was held as well. The ball went on in a lively mood till way past midnight.
