J/24 UBS World Championship - Vallarta 2007
Provided By Ambito
“The World’s Best Ever!”
The J/24 UBS World Championship, to be held in Nuevo Vallarta from March 1st till 9th, will reveal to the rest of the world what the Pacific Coast of Mexico already knows – that Banderas Bay is one of the most pristine and reliable sailing destinations in the world.
Banderas Bay, whose arms stretch 21 miles at their widest, is the second largest bay in the world. From Cabo Corrientes at its southernmost end to Punta Mita, the furthest point north, its shores vary from rugged craggy coastline to miles of spectacular beaches, from the simple beauty of traditional Mexican villages to luxurious upscale getaways.
Sailors from 14 different countries will be visiting Banderas Bay and the Vallarta Nayarit area, experiencing first hand its warm and consistent breezes during the 10 days of J/24 World competition. The J/24 is the most popular racing keelboat in the world, and this is the first time that an international competition of this scale has been held in Mexican waters.
Banderas Bay offers ideal conditions for this J/24 Worlds competition. These same 10 days in March of 2006 featured daytime temperatures of about 80° F (26° C°) with average winds of 14 knots. Banderas Bay is so consistent that a review of 2005 shows almost identical conditions. What a great Bay for a sailboat race !
One of the most ecologically healthy bays in the world, Banderas Bay is home to a spectacular array of marine life. Manta rays, Bottlenose Dolphins and Olive Ridley turtles abound, and it is the winter home and “nursery” for the Humpback Whales who journey from the North Pacific near Hawaii in a 4,000 to 6,000 mile migration. This concentrated population of marine life includes dorado (mahi mahi), sailfish, marlin, and tuna.
Banderas Bay also has great marine facilities – the region of Vallarta Nayarit, which includes the shoreline from Nuevo Vallarta to Punta Mita, boasts the popular cruiser anchorages of Punta Mita and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. In Nuevo Vallarta there are 290 boat slips, and the new La Cruz Marina will soon supply a further 400 ultra modern, state of the art slips in its upscale marina development.
How to get to the Worlds? Vallarta Nayarit? The region’s international airport in Puerto Vallarta sees 450 arrivals and departures every week, and service from most major international airlines. You could even catch the J/24 Worlds from the deck of a cruise ship – Puerto Vallarta is a popular stop on the Pacific Riviera route !
Where to stay? Vallarta Nayarit has approximately 8000 beds for you to choose from – visit www.vallarta-mexico.com for more information. This is the official website of the Vallarta Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Hotel & Motel Association of Bahia de Banderas, one of the major sponsors of the competition. Accommodations range from exclusive B&B’s to luxurious all inclusive beach resorts.
Marc Murphy, General Director of the Bureau, describes Vallarta Nayarit as a “modern upscale luxury destination surrounded by unspoiled nature,” and a perfect venue for an international regatta like the J/24 Worlds. Beautiful accommodations and dining await the sailors and their families, and the “unspoiled nature” of Banderas Bay guarantees the best of competitive conditions.
