An Improved Image for the Tunnel

Part of the improvement actions in different spots across town.

The tunnel on the Libramiento shows today a friendlier, more functional look as result of the improvement actions implemented by the municipal government, through its Public Works Department in recent days.

As part of the renovation works being carried out, personnel of the Public Works Department intensified the clean up and paint job on curbs and walls, as well as the replacement of over 200 light bulbs.

Said actions aim at maintaining the roads within the municipality in top condition, in order to offer a better image to the residents and visitors to this tourist destination, and to increase the safety of those who cross this tunnel every day.

Sixty-two People Regain Hearing

A remarkable advance is observed regarding past years, with 1500 people benefiting from the program in Puerto Vallarta, Colima, Manzanillo and Nayarit.

DIF System, StarKey Foundation and Lions Club of Puerto Vallarta held a hearing aid donation campaign in recent days.

The campaign aimed at low income families with members suffering from hearing disabilities. With the support of various altruistic organizations, 62 people from Puerto Vallarta received hearing aid apparatuses, totaling 124.

The Integral Program for the Care of Persons with Disabilities (PAID Spanish initials), coordinated by Miguel Angel Lopez Arce, informed that for several years this program has been successful thanks to the register put together by DIF, on which the progam bases to determine who will benefit from free hearing aids.

Lopez Arce said that during the two day campaign about 1500 people from all ages coming from different areas of the country received attention, individuals with limited or no hearing; caused by genetic causes or disease. They all now have the opportunity to reintegrate into their environment by regaining their hearing ability.

Puerto Vallarta Bets on Science

By earmarking funds for 150 thousand pesos, research will be supported towards the preservation of the natural environment of Puerto Vallarta

The city of Puerto Vallarta and the Jaliscan Academy of Sciences entered into a collaboration agreement, which evidences the city’s support of scientific research regarding the environment.

Within the framework of the first Municipal Science Journey, organized by the City Hall, Mayor Javier Bravo Carbajal handed out a check for 150 thousand pesos to fund scholarships and to encourage research among undergraduate and graduate students, aiming at generating alternatives as to preservation and sustainable management of natural resources.

At the signing ceremony, the mayor said “we do this convinced that this is a way of helping ourselves, because betting on science is betting on the benefit of our society”. He emphasized that fomenting scientific research must become a priority for the different levels of government, because this way, sustainable development of communities can be guaranteed.

In turn, President of the Jaliscan Science Academy Francisco Javier Nuñez Cornu said he was very pleased with this accomplishment. This is the first time a municipal government manifests among its first actions its support of science, which sets a very important precedent and an example to the country.

“Thank you Mr. Mayor for the contribution you are making and for supporting the development of science, in particular the studies of the natural environment of Puerto Vallarta”, Nuñez Cornu stated.

With actions like these, scientific research in Puerto Vallarta benefits, and advances towards the creation of tools and policies for the benefit of our society and the harmonious growth of this beautiful city.

New Sports Complex for Puerto Vallarta

The Alfonso Diaz Santos sports park will enjoy an Olympic-size pool, running track and high performance center

The City council unanimously voted the motion to earmark 12 million pesos from the chapter 33, via the Municipality Strengthening Fund, to carry out two projects; the first of them is the construction of the first phase of a Regional Sports Complex at the Colonia Bobadilla Alfonso Diaz Santos sports park. The second project passed by the city council is the construction of the Federacion grand avenue.

During the analysis and debate of the motions, Mayor Javier Bravo Carbajal said the investment in the sports complex is a good investment that will yield enormous benefit to the practice of sports, but most of all it represents a healthy alternative for young athletes, and will reduce crime indexes

He explained, at the request of some council members, that the municipality will contribute 12 million pesos from the chapter 33 funds, and the state government will contribute an equal amount, which makes 24 million pesos; out of which 11.6 million pesos will be budgeted to build the first phase of the sports complex and 12.5 million pesos will go to the Federacion Avenue project.

Personnel from the Public Works Department outlined the architectural characteristics of the sports complex, which will consist of Olympic pool with diving pool and stands; a running track, and a high performance center for the different sport disciplines.

In turn, the head of the Sports Promotion Department, Cesar Macías Martinez, emphasized the advantages and benefits of this ambitious project for the youth and athletes in general, and listed the sports to be practiced in each of the different areas of the complex.

As to the Federacion Avenue, in its first phase, it was announced that this will run from the road to Las Palmas and Rio Ameca, to the crossing of the Pitillal River and the Libramiento, a 35-meter wide avenue with a 10-meter central channel.

Promises Kept, 100 Days into Javier Bravo's Term

Mayor Bravo recounted actions undertaken during the first 100 days of his office

By presenting concrete results for Puerto Vallarta, Mayor Javier Bravo Carbajal delivered an address on the state of the municipal administration 100 days into his term, proof of the outlines and priorities that will set the pace for this government.
“From the very beginning of this municipal administration, we came to the conclusion that urban and economic dynamic of the municipality makes it unavoidable to face the problems in an immediate manner” said the mayor.

Ex-mayors, members of the municipal council, representatives of the different social sectors and citizens in general, Bravo Carbajal recounted the achievements and the actions undertaken as to Treasury, Social Development, Municipal Utilities, Public Security, Tourist Promotion, foment of the economy, infrastructure and territorial orderliness; as well as the goals and projects that will brought about during the current administration’s term.

In his address, Bravo Carbajal stated that during the first quarter the revenue reached 220.1 million pesos, a 20.5 million-peso increase as compared to the previous year, and the negotiation of participations for 59.8 million pesos.
Likewise, the mayor commented on actions established under the concept of Social Development to prioritize projects to be included by the Municipal Development Planning Committee and the earmarking by the assembly of the municipal council of funds up to 17.4 million pesos for Infrastructure, Stimulation of Basic Education, Popular Insurance, reposition of the Public Security fleet, and programs such as Habitat and 3X1 for migrants.

He said that Casa Puerto Vallarta, the representation of Puerto Vallarta in Guadalajara, has managed to land the program Rural Housing, in support of over 200 families in rural communities.

The campaign “Clean Vallarta” (Vallarta Limpio) and the program “Saturdays for Better Living” kicked off, aiming to make Puerto Vallarta the cleanest destination in the Mexican Republic.

AS to Public Security, Mayor Javier Bravo remarked on the diminishing of the number of complaints filed before the State Commission of Human Rights, and set in motion the certification process for the police corps, to make this one of the best police in the country; besides working to make Puerto Vallarta the first destination with certified lifeguards.

He emphasized the interest of his government to end the irregular selling of land. Regarding tourist and economic promotion, the program “Let’s Embellish Downtown” was implemented, and the consultation with residents, merchants, and the College of Architects began, to promote a project to rescue the Historic Center of town. The destination was promoted in the international Berlin fair (BIT) and the Acapulco Tianguis.

As to promotion of agriculture, he mentioned the setting in motion of a program to promote organic agriculture; and in ecological matters, Bravo Carbajal emphasized his purpose to work for the preservation of the mountains. He also announced that last Monday the remedial measures to close the Magisterio city dump will begin.

“This is the result of 100 days of the municipal government that I’m proud to chair. We have worked for the primordial target of making our municipality a better place to live, promoting social wellbeing and sustainable economic development of Puerto Vallarta” Javier Bravo said, and volunteered that next week (this week) the Development Policy Municipal Agenda will be defined, which will outline the issues this government will board and work upon.

DIF, 100-Day Report Delivered by Aleyda Bravo

Addressing an audience made of representatives of public and private organizations, as well as the general public making a total of 800 guests, Aleyda Isabel Bravo Carbajal, president of the Municipal DIF System, presented a report on the actions carried out by the system during the first 100 days of the new municipal administration headed by her brother Javier Bravo Carbajal.

Reiterating the pledge she made to the population and showing with facts the closeness and the social orientation that distinguish the current administration, Aleyda Bravo expressed her thankfulness for the support that social assistance organizations have given DIF, and said that from day one the work of the organization has been oriented by the analysis and detection of the most vulnerable groups in the municipality, and benefited largely families in situation of poverty.

As part of the events, and aiming for encompassing the community in the assistance tasks, Mayor Javier Bravo sworn in the Volunteer Networks, Children Promotor Clubs and Third Age Clubs to make their participation formal.

Song, dance, handicrafts, and fruit preserves made by the third age groups, the School for Silent Persons, the National Association for Personal Improvement, Chapter Puerto Vallarta; Training Centers and personnel from the Assistance Centers for Child Development made the delights of the audience.

A multimedia presentation provided the facts of the DIF work, such as 4431 persons receiving counseling, at the DIF facilities, 35 children receive care and education at the New Life Shelter.

DIF Journeys under the motto “Near you, so you can live better” have benefited 1068 people, by providing free services to them, from hair cuts to oral hygiene, preventive health care, eye examination, and other services provided by the system.

The hard work of the Program for the Care of Persons with Disabilities was emphasized, which in collaboration with Ronald McDonald Foundation and the Starky Foundation helped 925 people improve their hearing ability, while channeled others to rehabilitation clinics, and provided wheelchairs and crutches, among other services program beneficiaries receive.

Marriott International Recognizes Dennis Whitelaw at the
Worldwide General Managers Awards

During the Worldwide General Managers Awards of Marriott International, celebrated in San Francisco, Dennis Whitelaw, general manager of the CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa was recognized with the “Leadership Excellence Award” and the “Mustang Award.”

The Leadership Excellence Award is designed to recognize General Managers who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in 2006. This award recognizes leaders who have made extraordinary contributions to the business and have made and influenced decisions that protect and cultivate Marriott’s corporate culture. The Mustang Award is given to the general managers who overcame tremendous adversity. Examples of previous winners of the Mustang Award include: a general manager that demonstrated courageous leadership and exemplary concern for the welfare of guests and associates during a hurricane, or a leader who achieved exceptional business results and maintained high levels of customer satisfaction, even while undergoing a major renovation.

Also Lita Aguirre, director of sales and marketing was awarded with the Sales Leader of the Year and Gabriela Dávalos, director of revenue management of the hotel, was recognized with the Revenue Management Team of the Year.

Ceremony in Memory of Manuel Lepe

Events marked the 71st anniversary of his birth

Municipal dignitaries and relatives of the late Puerto Vallarta painter Manuel Lepe, gathered last Tuesday top pay homage to the memory of the artist who devoted his life to aiding children.

At the stairway in the City Hall, below the mural painted by Lepe in 1981, Mayor Javier Bravo Carbajal and Manuel Lepe’s widow Mrs. Laura Quiroz, presented a floral offering.

Mayor Bravo said that besides being a great painter and the pride of Puerto Vallarta, Manuel Lepe Macedo was a great man who imbedded his constant concern, the children of Puerto Vallarta, in his art.

“Lepe was always ready to participate in every community activity. He was special, that’s why I have given instructions that next year we have a very special commemoration. A series of activities will be organized to honor his memory” the mayor stated.

In turn, City Historian Juan Manuel Gómez Encarnación, reminiscing of the painter’s life, said that his story is linked to that of Puerto Vallarta, and he was an important promoter of his homeland, through his exhibitions abroad, like the one held at the Museum of Art and Sciences in Los Angeles, California.

Later, the mayor attended the opening of an exhibition of Manuel Lepe’s paintings at the Arisocale Baby Gym, which was re-named after the artist. Besides the original paintings by Manuel Lepe, the works of little children were also exhibited. The little artists and the Lepe family enjoyed the reception.

In attendance at the commemoration of the great naïf painter were council members Concesa Pelayo Arciniega, Claudia Verónica Gómez Quintero and Lizett Franco García; as well as Chief of the Art and Culture Department David Izazaga Márquez; Administrative Major Officer Marcelo Mantecón Gutiérrez; Director of Social Development Salvador González Resendiz, and Director of Public Works Arturo Dávalos Villanueva, among others.
