President of ICOMOS Visits Puerto Vallarta

It was a highly fruitful Puerto Vallarta visit by Architect Javier Villalobos, chairman of the board for ICOMOS Mexicano and member of the council for ICOMOS International. He was invited by Deputy Jorge Villanueva, Chairman of the Tourism Commission of the State Congress to study the viability of naming an element of our municipality as Patrimony of Mankind.

During the weekend, Mr. Villalobos toured the bay, the center of town and learned about our history and the traditions of Puerto Vallarta, whose historic center, as well as its surroundings can be susceptible of make the list of monuments patrimony of mankind, previous restoration and preservation according to the recommendations of ICOMOS.

A presentation was made before Mayor Javier Bravo and dignitaries from the Tourism, Ecology and Culture Departments, to outline ICOMOS’ role as a UNESCO organization.

The announcement was made of the “International Symposium Tourism, Culture and Nature” intended to be held in Puerto Vallarta, and in which historians, urban planners, geologists, anthropologists and archaeologists from twenty countries would be participating. A letter of recommendations for Puerto Vallarta would be issued at the end of the symposium, which would aid in the decision making process regarding the ecologic, cultural, social, and tourist environment of this tourist destination.

ON other matters, the chairman of the Tourism Commission of the State Congress, received a request to register San Sebastian del Oeste as Patrimony of Mankind, and Architect Villalobos said that such application is in the Qualitative List of ICOMOS and Deputy Villanueva is to follow up on it.

ICOMOS Mexicano is the National Mexican Committee of the International Council for Monuments and Sites, a UNESCO “A”, non-governmental, non profit organization; which currently groups 200 countries through national committees, grouping persons and institutions who work for preservation of monuments, clusters and sites of archaeological, historical, or artistic interest. Mexico is a founding member since 1965 and one of the signing countries of the Chapter of Venice, a document drawn up for protection of the patrimony.

ICOMOS Mexicano’s labour is diverse. It provides consulting to private organizations and individuals by means of collaboration agreements; it collaborates with proposals of sites and monuments to make the UNESCO list of the Patrimony of Mankind; it aides in integrating the dossiers and it is the organization in charge of following up on sites and monuments in the list.

As opinion organ, always supported by serious studies and analysis, unbiased and technically valid, it supports projects and programs in defense of the cultural patrimony and has opposed those clearly affecting it. It participates and supports universities as to training programs in its specialty.

Since 1978 ICOMOS Mexicano has held 24 international patrimony preservation symposia where specialists meet, both national and foreign. It also organizes regional meetings on specific themes through its various scientific committees.
In 2001, the Federico Secosse Award was instituted, to be granted to a person who has devoted his life to work for the preservation of the cultural patrimony. It consists of golden medal and award diploma; the highest decoration the organization awards.

Miss Puerto Vallarta, 2007 Beauty Pageant Announced

The City of Puerto Vallarta’s Departments of Public Relations, Municipal Tourism and Art and Culture announced the beauty pageant Miss Puerto Vallarta 2007, where the representative of Vallartan beauty will be elected. Miss Puerto Vallarta will represent the municipality in national and international events. Requisites to enter the contest are: to be native of Puerto Vallarta or resident for more than ten years, 18 years or older, single without children, good looking, have a talent, minimum height of 5’8”.

The winner of the contest will bear the crown for one year, and will receive a cash prize of ten thousand pesos, while the runner-up will receive five thousand pesos and the third place will get three thousand pesos.

Public Relations Manager Jose Gonzalez Guerrero is in charge of the organization of the pageant, with the support of the Tourism Department, and the Art and Culture Department. Event coordinator is Ramón Diaz.

Improving the Environment, Children's City Council Proposal

With great enthusiasm, Puerto Vallarta Children became Council Members for a Day and handed over their proposals to the mayor

Within the framework of the celebrations on the Day of the Children, students making up the Children’s City Council assembled for the ordinary session of the City Hall and later held a session on their own, chaired by Mayor Javier Bravo, during which the young legislators proposed the motions result of three days of work. Mayor Javier Bravo affirmed the saying of young Martha Escobedo, who acted as municipal attorney, by saying that the grandeur of a nation rises from its children, and it has been stated on several occasions that values are fundamental to our country, state and most importantly our municipality.

Mayor Bravo said the Children’s City Council is a very important stimulus, since these children had a dream to become mayor, attorney, secretary general and council members for a day, but there are many other dreams worth working for. He told the children: “dare to fly, you have wings, dare to pursue your dreams, dare to be good citizens; this is what is good for Vallarta, Jalisco and Mexico.

In turn, the children members of the Children’s City Council, proposed three motions they developed during three days of legislative work. These are “Clean, Safe School” “Know your Municipality” and “Children’s Rights”.

For each of the motions it is outlined a series of actions, such as the donation of two garbage bins to each school, plants and trees, the publication of a booklet with a brief history of the municipality, and the organization of events to involve the participation of children.

At the end of the session, the mayor presented Mayor for a Day Jairo Arreola Amaral with a personal computer and recognition certificates, educational stimulate and various presents to each child.

First Toys for Tots Park Inaugurated in Puerto Vallarta

The park is located next to the DIF offices

As part of the Day of the Children celebrations and in support of those who need the most, Toys for Tots, in coordination with DIF and the CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort marked the opening of the first of a series of playgrounds to be opened in the municipality for Vallartan children.

With the attendance of tens of children from La Aurora and other nearby colonias and their parents, the symbolic inaugural ribbon was cut by Mayor Javier Bravo, DIF President Aleyda Bravo and CasaMagna Marriott Sales and Marketing Director Lita Aguirre. In attendance at the ceremonies were also representatives of the organization that works “for the smiles of Vallartan Children” Toys for Tots.

It is important to note that this playground was completed by mid-April, but it was decided to officially mark its opening with a ceremony on the Day of the Children. DIF President Aleyda Bravo remarked “there is not one single day when the playground is empty. Children from surrounding neighborhoods bring joy here every day”.
Other playgrounds will follow in other locations to be determined by the city, as the important work carried out by Toys for Tots continues in Puerto Vallarta. At the event, trees were planted, which were adopted by the children, to look after them and make this playground a better place to play and have fun with the whole family.

After the ceremony, toys were given away to children in attendance and a lunch-on was offered by the hosts, in a lively, friendly family atmosphere.

Positioning begins along with the calendar of destination events

On the morning of May 2, at the facilities of the Hotel Tropicana, Grupo Sur Director Norma Alicia Lynn, joined by representatives of several member companies, presented the progress made till the month of April, and announced new projects to be undertaken.

The press conference was presided over by Oscar Rivero, president of the Conventions and Visitors Bureau and the Tourism Board, Ludwig Estrada, representative of the Jalisco Tourism Secretariat, Enrique Tovar, as representative of the director of Municipal Tourism, and Wally Lobato, sub-chief of the Art and Culture Department. Norma Lynn delivered an introductory speech and gave the floor to Oscar Rivero, who talked about the importance of the South Zone of Puerto Vallarta in the history of the destination, and also about the revenue generated by hotels and condominiums and the tendencies of the market.

In turn, Ludwig Estrada talked about Ecotourism and the impulse that must be given to Rural Tourism, something that is lived naturally, within the areas of Conchas Chinas, Punta Negra, Amapas Mismaloya and Las Juntas y Los Veranos.
Enrique Tovar, Under director of Tourism for the municipality, mentioned the interest of the department to work for Puerto Vallarta with the representatives of the different zones in the destination.

Wally Lobato was last to take the floor. He thanked Grupo Sur for the invitation and for their interest in promoting art and culture beyond the spaces where they are usually presented, and to bring these advantages to the different audiences coming to the South Zone.

In attendance at the conference was Luis Fitch, president of the Restaurant Chamber, and Alejandra Cornejo, General Manager of the Tropicana Hotel, a member of the Grupo Sur.

In closing, Norma Alicia Lynn said that the event calendar will be announced shortly, since some dates are still to be confirmed. She also volunteered that in September the first issue of the magazine Zona Sur will be published, aimed at the tourist segment, without neglecting the local reader.

She also clarified that making segmented promotion is not conceived with this important work in the exterior, but rather working together for the good of Vallarta, on the basis of the advantages and characteristics of the zone represented by Grupo Sur.

Celebration of the International Day of the Dance

The beginning of the festivities on the occasion of the International Day of the Dance was marked by a wonderful performance by Xiutla Folk Ballet. So far the folkloric ballet of the City of Puerto Vallarta has had 966 performances throughout Mexico and abroad.

The performance held on Wednesday, April 25 served as the formal presentation of the ballet before the new municipal administration.

Enrique Barrios Limón, director of the ballet that has represented Puerto Vallarta in Mexico and abroad, spoke of the work Xiutla has been doing for the childhood and youth of Puerto Vallarta for 12 years.

“We have carried out this activity with the only idea that the children are introduced to the marvels of Mexican popular art, particularly dance and music. We are here to say who we are and present the work we do” Barrios Limón said to the audience that filled the Aquiles Serdan amphitheater.

The colorful costumes, the beat of Mexican music, the dancers’ smiling faces and a quite responsive audience, filled the evening. The 966th performance of the Xiutla Ballet also marked the presentation of the new members of the company, 40 young boys and girls who danced with the ballet for the first time.

The admiration the ballet enjoys was made evident. Folk dance schools are being established in the rural districts of the municipality, a log caressed dream which is coming true thanks to the support Puerto Vallarta is giving to cultural activities.
Special guests to the ballet performance were dignitaries of the municipal administration headed by Mayor Javier Bravo.

The program included dances from the states of Jalisco, Veracruz, Campeche, Michoacan, Chiapas, Oaxaca and Tamaulipas.

Progress Made toward Preservation of Puerto Vallarta Mountains

The municipality of Puerto Vallarta participated in the 2nd. Latin American Convention of Protected Areas, Biosphere Reserves and Biologic Corridors, held in Mexico City during the days from May 2 to 4.

This tourist destination was represented by the person in charge of Environmental Education and Culture, Juana Adelfa Delgado, and it made a difference as to the proposal to protect the mountain areas before national and Latin American participating institutions, promoting ecologic culture and the commitment of the municipal government has made from the beginning of its term.

On this issue, the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas (CONANP, Spanish initials), showed great interest in the proposal to protect Puerto Vallarta’s mountains under the terms of a Reserve of the Mountain Biosphere, including mountainous systems in neighboring municipalities.

CONANP Commissioner Ernesto Enkerlin, said that protecting the mountains is a priority for this preservation zone on a national level, and expressed his interest to provide the necessary support to this important task and to work together with state and municipal authorities, other Latin American institutions joined in the pledge and proposed environmental studies and projects in Puerto Vallarta.

Within the framework of the event, Delgado Quintana announced the First International Convention “Tourism in Natural Areas as Strategy for Conservation and Development” being organized by the municipality of Puerto Vallarta to be held in November, and the immediate, positive response makes it sure that top specialists will attend.
