| Puerto Vallarta | | February
9th - 15th, 2003 | Fish Vendors to
Be Relocated Architect Felipe Ríos has won
the call for tenders with his proposal to build eight comercial stands inside
the "5 de diciembre" market. That is where fish vendors presently located
near the Gutierrez Rizo supermarket will be relocated. Their
relocation is a result of the complaints lodged by various sectors against the
foul smells and unpleasant image caused by their presence on the streets in that
tourist area. Work was scheduled to start on February 10th and be completed by
the end of March.
USS Stethem
in Puerto Vallarta Thirty members of the Puerto
Vallarta Chapter of the Navy League were treated to a reception aboard the United
States Ship Stethem (DDG 63) the evening of Thursday, February 6. The USS Stethem,
a guided missile destroyer with a homeport of San Diego, was at anchor in Banderas
Bay for four days. While the ship was in port, many of the crew of 340 sailors
(including five women officers) were scheduled to come ashore to donate their
time painting the library under the direction of the Navy League. In addition,
the USS Stethem was carrying donated medical supplies from the Navy League warehouse
in San Diego to be distributed in Puerto Vallarta where needed. Commanding
Officer David W. Melin presented plaques of appreciation to the Navy League and
to Admiral Suarez, Commander of the Naval Sector for the Mexican Navy in Puerto
Vallarta and Captain Melin accepted a certificate from the Navy League to the
Stethem. At the reception, guests were treated to cocktails
and a buffet dinner as well as tours of the destroyer, which was put into service
in 1995. The ship is named the Stethem in memory of U.S. Marine Robert Deane Stethem
who was killed by Lebanese terrorists in 1985 during the hijacking of an airliner. Archives
