218 Couples Take Wedding Vows

Two hundred and eighteen couples took their wedding vows last week at the Jalisco Salon of the Krystal Vallarta Hotel in a yearly event called "Collective Weddings".
Puerto Vallarta Mayor, Pedro Ruiz Higuera and his spouse Mayra, president of the local DIF chapter witnessed the union of the couples.

Starting early, the attendance listened carefully to the pre-marital talk given by the General Secretary of City Hall who explained the municipal program entitled "United Against Sexual Child Exploitation". She made it clear that in Puerto Vallarta, child abuse will not be tolerated and stressed that "the family is the foundation for a healthy society and Vallarta deserves such as society."

For his part, the Mayor congratulated those who decided to take the big step and his wife made a toast to the newlyweds.

Besides legalizing their status after 37 years together, 62-year old Camerino Espinosa de la Cruz and Teresa Rodríguez Ramírez, 59, also received their birth certificates in the name of 152 others in attendance.

One clear example that proved that it is never too late to legalize a relationship was that of the couple from Las Palmas, Martha Elena Peña and Lorenzo Tapia, who decided to do so after having been together for 39 and a half years. Smiling at each other when asked what made them decide, they answered, "because we are already old and it's better this way." Their only daughter, Elvira, who is about to turn 39 helped them make the decision so that she may be legally registered.

Public Security Receives Sophisticated Israeli Arms

The message to delinquents is clear: "we are armed and we will not be held hostage by delinquents," words spoken by the Director of Public Security, Transit and Firefighters of Puerto Vallarta, as he accepted delivery of new arms and bullet-proof jackets from the city's Mayor.

City Hall invested $1 Million pesos to acquire 40 Galil-type semi-automatic weapons from Israel. In addition, it also received 20 9-mm. Brownings and 10 30-mm. specials on loan from the State Department of Public Security. (V.O.)

More Control Over Garbage Business

In order to avoid illegal competition with regard to those who make a living from picking over garbage at the city dump and those who want to enter or purchase recyclable waste, City Hall approved the hiring of three people to control access to the site, as well as the requirements that will have to be satisfied by companies or people in order to do accomplish such transactions.

This resulted from the growing problem of garbage in Puerto Vallarta, a matter that must be analyzed from an integral point of view that includes the stages of storage, collection, recycling, transportation, treatment and final disposal of the waste material. Of all the refuse generated every day in this town, the majority is picked up but the rest is disposed of in the streets, vacant lots, parks, gardens and roadways.

Emiliano Zapata Neighborhood Donates Bulletproof Vests To Police Department

James Halas, Chief of Police in Skokie, Illinois, donated this equipment with the help of ex-cop Leon Roger Reiter who has been a resident of Puerto Vallarta's Emiliano Zapata neighborhood for 13 years.

City Council No Longer Looking Only at "El Salado"

With regard to the possibility that the Convention Center may be built in the "to-be-urbanized" zone of El Salado Estuary, we may hear an announcement from Puerto Vallarta's City Council that it may be built elsewhere.
