México maintains its appeal to foreign investment

One of the mainachievements of the Mexican Federal Governmenthas been a 13,244 million dollars direct foreign investment during the first semester of 2007; 39% higher than was obtained during the same period last year.
Eduardo Sojo, Minister of Economy, emphasized the amount as a result of the confidence of foreign investors in the administration of President Felipe Calderón and in Mexico’s economic future.
To the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (Entrepreneurs Coordination Council) and the Cámara Nacional de la Industria de la Transformación (National Chamber of the Conversion Industry), has been a positive factor, helped by the good risk qualification of the country, 70 base points, one of the lowest registered under the present administration.
“2007’s first semester represents the best beginning of year in history in regards to inflow of foreign investment and places this semester as the second best of any semester in history, only after the 2nd semester of 2001, when Citigroup acquired Banamex for 12,500 million dollars.
The amount is formed by 5,740.8 million dollars, or 43.3% of new investments; 2,812.6 million dollars or 21.2% of profit reinvestment, and 4,690 million dollars or 35.4% of accounts between companies.
It was mainly channeled to the manufacturing industry, with 44.2%; to the financial services sector, with 29%; to commerce, 8.9%; to other services, 5.7%; and to the communications and transportation sector, 3.9 percent.
Foreign capital came: 60.7% from the United States; 13.9% from Spain; 7.3% from Bermudas; 4% from the Virgin Islands; 3.8% from the Netherlands; 3% from France; and 1.5 percent from Belgium.
The Federal Government therefore increases its foreign investment forecast for 2007, to reach the amount of 23 billion dollars by year’s end, given the first semester trend continues.
