Writer’s Museum doors open
Notimex - El Universal – April 2008
René Avilés Fabila Foundation (FRAF) opened the doors of the "Museo del Escritor" (Writer’s Museum), alone in its gender in Mexico and probably the rest of the world as well; and restarted its cycle of yearly activities.
Mexican writer René Avilés, director of the foundation mentioned that despite being such a reduced space, “having a museum dedicated to writers, be it Mexican or foreign was necessary".
Among the museum’s attractions, the public will find 400 first editions of the works of José Saramago, Gabriel García Márquez (both Nobel Literature prizes), Carlos Monsiváis, Edgar Alan Poe, Carlos Fuentes, Rafael Solana and José Agustín, among many others.
Many of these books are signed by their authors. “Close to 95% of the collection is made up of authors of Mexican origin, some Americans and a few Europeans”.
He noted that this space was meant to be in the heart of the Mexican capital. “At the moment we are looking for such a site. It would be most adequate to house it in a building or mansion within the Historical Center of Mexico City, but that has not been easy and it is rather costly to our economic capacity”.
Besides those works, the “Writer’s Museum” houses within its walls around 200 cartoons, engravings and photos by famous authors, mostly Mexican. There are also pens, typewriters, reading glasses, letters and documents which belonged to said personalities.
Avilés remembered that he still keeps many unpacked objects in the warehouse; all of these were lent or donated by the writers’ families, collectors or heirs.
FRAF director informed on the various activities planned for this year, among them a homage to those killed in Tlatelolco in 1968, as well as tributes to the memories of figures such as Elena Garro, Raúl Anguiano, Miguel N. Lira and composer Manuel M. Ponce.
The Autonomous University of Puebla will participate jointly with the foundation in organizing the homage to Elena Garro, the functions will take place at the University.
One of the goals of the museum and the foundation is to bring culture, in this case literature, closer to other states within Mexico “in such a way that FRAF will remain open to proposals to bring its activities around the republic” .
The foundation is also betting hard on promoting young writers, it will launch a program of scholarships to writers under thirty years of age to that effect.
Avilés emphasized the participation of writing professionals in the multiple workshops to be offered this year in the foundation’s halls.
In the musical field, FRAF prepares tributes to Manuel M. Ponce, through a remasterization of the albums he recorded with the Camera Orchestra of the National Prep School (Escuela Nacional Preparatoria) along with maestro Uberto Zanolli.
Finally, Avilés noted that maestro and opera singer Roberto Bañuelas will also be celebrated, the functions will include round tables and conferences and their outcome will be presented to the baritone at the end. Email to a friend
