MEXICO MIRROR

UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) was declared humanity’s cultural heritage by UNESCO

"UNAM’s University City’s Campus is humanity’s cultural heritage for being directly and materially associated to events, ideas and works of the Mexican culture with universal extraordinary significance.”

"UNAM’s University City’s Campus is humanity’s cultural heritage for being an outstanding sample of Latin America’s modern architecture and reminiscent of pre-Hispanic architecture.”

"UNAM’s University City’s Campus is humanity’s cultural heritage for being a constant reference of the quality and plurality of thought of great personalities of science, the arts and humanities on the national and international level.”

What makes CU (University City so particular?

Its exceptionality lies in the fact that, despite being a modern work, the past is present in it. It was capable of amalgamating tradition and the moment’s avant-garde; what is local with what is universal.

It is also so because it underlines the public vocation of civil architecture while incorporating artistic conceptions into the buildings, not as aggregates or additions, but as an integral part of themselves.

It is also so because the landscape is determinant in its structure, without its presence, the result would not have been the same: it appears an all-involving factor while it operates as an articulating element between the volumes that make up the group. The harmonious position of the buildings makes it appear as a whole and not as the sum of different isolated elements. One aspect that must be emphasized is the fact that constructions are elevated from the surface allowing foot traffic among their main levels, permitting open and integrating tours.

It is also so because of the value it gives to the void as a composing element of a public and symbolic architecture. Its impact in the field of intangibility is of no minor importance, as its originality conferred an iconic identity to one of the most important cultural projects in Mexico’s XX century, it turns out to be Mexico’s National University, a public, secular and free studies center operating as an efficient instrument of social mobility in a country well known for its acute social differences.
