Oaxaca, Point of musical encounter
Yanet Aguilar Sosa | El Universal • Translated by Eduardo Rincón-Gallardo – August 2008

Instrumenta 08 will take place from July 28 to August 9,

In its fifth edition, Instrumenta Verano 2008 is intent in keeping alive its goal of taking musical education to performers and the public as well as to bring about new world-level pieces for the first time; this is the case of Haydn’s Quartet Opus 17 No. 6 performed by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano (Latin-American Quartet), as per the margin annotations on the original manuscript by the Mozart family.

The piece, discovered by musicologist Cliff Eisen in the house of Mozart, will be the main course of the musical encounter to be held from July 28 to August 9 in the City of Oaxaca. It will be a world premiere because, although it has been published, it has not been performed as per Mozart’s annotations.

The encounter will also feature the inauguration of Karure; an oboe piece by Akira Nishimura, and Mendelssohn’s trio for flute cello and piano. Its thematic axis will be “The Colors of the City”, to commemorate the 100th birthday of the late Olivier Messiaen.

To remember the author, born in 1908 and died in 1992, Instrumenta Oaxaca —directed by Ignacio Toscano— will give a “perpetual homage” during the days of the festival, through eight concerts, performing in parts his piano piece “Twenty Glances at Baby Jesus”.

During 13 days the city will be dressed to celebrate as it does during “Oaxaca Tradición” and “Oaxaca Contemporánea”; in this occasion the thematic axis is the relationship between music and color.

Ignacio Toscano, director general of Instrumenta Oaxaca, assured the encounter will enjoy the attendance of personalities such as Patrick Barbier, Dmitri Berlinsky, Ori Kam or Alberto Bocina. Email to a friend
