Chihuahua International Festival
By Ricardo Cer๓n • El Universal – September 2008

Chiuahua International FestivalSpanish tenor Plácido Domingo and Nobel Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú, will be among the personalities to take part in the fourth edition of the Chihuahua International Festival Cultural Encounter to be held from September 4th to October 1st, 2008.

In this occasion the festival will feature 450 cultural activities by artists from 21 countries, who will perform at 53 different municipalities of the state.

Brazil will be the guest country in this edition of the Festival, it will therefore be represented by the Afro-Caribbean Musical Group Olodum, the Amazonia Ballet and the singer Gal Costa.

Meanwhile Sinaloa and Cuauhtémoc will respectively be the guest state and municipality in this edition, featuring the presence of the percussions group Stomp and the musical-dancing group African Footprint, from South Africa.

After having had the presence of Spanish tenor José Carreras back in 2006, this year again, an Iberian tenor, Plácido Domingo, will be the Festival’s main attraction, therefore to perform at the closing concert to be held on October 1st at the Olympic University Stadium if the City of Chihuahua.

Chiuahua International Festival An Omáwari or Sister Cities Encounter will be held within the Festival’s program, aiming at promoting a cultural interchange among the native peoples of the continent, this time featuring corn as the main theme, where the main guest will be, on September 7th, Guatemalan Nobel prize winner, Rigoberta Menchú.

Prize Gawí Tónara (meaning world pillars, in rarámuri language), will this time be awarded to Erasmo Palma for the promotion of the region’s traditional music.

In a press conference held at the Palace of Fine Arts, the state governor, José Reyes Baeza Terrazas highlighted the Festival’s growth in quality and quantity, as it will now cover 53 of the 67 state’s municipalities, holding activities in enclosed and public spaces.

He considers cultural and artistic development should go hand in hand with the economic growth registered in the state.

The state executive also emphasized the fact that if culture is not incorporated into the economic development, a cold and sterile, mechanized society would be created, it is therefore vitally important to Chihuahua to promote artistic activities, mainly now that it has the fifth largest economy in the country.

According to Raúl Balderrama Montes, operative coordinator of the event, mentioned that the state government will be labeling 32 million pesos for the Festival, in addition to the resources the private sector and the municipal governments will grant. Email to a friend
