President Calderón Meets with Directors of Canadian Tourist Sector

June 2010

The Presidency reports that as part of his official visit to Canada, President Felipe Calderón met this morning with CEOs from the Canadian tourist sector.

At the meeting, they exchanged points of view on bilateral relations between Mexico and Canada, the current situation in Mexico and its potential for tourism and investment.

MexicoDuring an interactive dialogue, the Mexican president described the enormous attraction Mexico has for Canadians. He pointed out that in 2009, Mexico was visited by 1.2 million citizens from that country, meaning that for the fifth consecutive year, there has been an increase in the number of Canadian visitors.

He said that Mexico is a compulsory reference in world tourism because of its natural, cultural and historical wealth and most importantly, the hospitality of its people.

He added that government is working to ensure that Mexico is an unforgettable experience for visitors, by providing training and support for tourist investments and developing infrastructure.

The participants shared their views and stressed the fact that Mexico's hospitality provides an enormous competitive advantage, distinguishing it from other parts of the world.

Lastly, the President invited businessmen in the Canadian tourist sector to exploit recent market niches oriented towards cultural, environmental and ecotourism in Mexico and to discover the Routes of Mexico, presented last week, as well as sun and beach destinations.

MexicoThe tourist sector executives attending the meeting with President Calderón included Isadore Sharp, President of Four Seasons hotels; Stephen Hunter, President of Sunwing Travel Group; Lawrence Elliot, Vice President of Sunwing Travel Group; Surjit Babra, Chairman and CEO de SkyLink Travel Group; Dina Bertolo, Vice President of Thomas Cook North America; Jonathan Carroll, President de Itravel2000; Dave Cecco, President of Total Vacations; Tammy Cecco, CEO of Total Vacations; Tom Storey, President of Fairmont Hotels and WestJet Airlines; Hugh Dunleavy, Vice President of West Jet Airlines;  Benjamin Smith, Commercial Director of Air Canada Airlines.
