President Inaugurates Moctezuma II Exhibition:
Time and Destiny of a Governor

consists of over 200 pieces.

President Felipe Calderón inaugurated the exhibition Moctezuma II: Time and Destiny of a Governor, at the Museum of the Great Temple, inthe Historic Center of Mexico City, adding that it is a “historic exhibition, on a level with the Bicentennial of our Independence and the Centennial of our Revolution and on a level with the great cultural legacy we have from pre-Hispanic peoples, primarily the Mexica.”
Accompanied by his wife, Margarita Zavala; Public Education Secretary, Alonso Lujambio Irazábal; President of the National Council for Culture and the Arts, Consuelo Sáizar Guerrero and archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma, Director of the Great Temple Project and curator of the exhibition, the President said that it is also, “On a level with the great empire expressed in the force, images, constructions. architecture, ceramics and everything we see around us in this museum, which was embodied in the great ruler Moctezuma II, the emperor at the peak of Mexica civilization and culture.
He explained that, among other important things, the exhibition provides the opportunity to admire the Codex Moctezuma, a monumental work that registers events of the time, since, for example, it shows the Great Temple, described in that codex, under the temple to Moctezuma Xocoyotzin, adding that he was killed by the Spaniards.
President Felipe Calderón congratulated the archeologists that worked on the discovery and restoration of the magnificent find of the goddess Tlatlecuhtli, the basis of the exhibition and a finding led by Eduardo Matos Moctezuma.
A propos of this, the President said: “And I am very excited about this for a specific reason. This great finding, which today forms part of the Moctezuma II Exhibition: Time and Destiny of a Governor, is a finding which I have had the opportunity to accompany during my three and a half years as President.
He added that, "One of the actions I have most enjoyed, among my many satisfactions as president, has been, when I used to come here more, (since the National Palace is now under construction because of the large gallery we are building on the occasion of the Bicentennial), was to watch the progress of this new discovery in the Great Temple.
